Cool project! While we have a micro camper already this could be a really cool project to build and flip if nothing else.

Not for now. I may actually get my Taco painted a dark green (not military green) if it gets more scratches, which I'm doing nothing to prevent at this point.

I boondock on private ground usually so do not worry about theft of trailer or equipment. Truck tarp company made the tarp that has worked very good and lasted 10 years so far.

Nice choice on the trailer. I have a M416 and the one you were looking at was too nice to turn into a camper. The larger cheaper one made the most sense if you were going to dive into modifying it for your use.

Time to resurrect an old thread! OP, any photos from the front and rear of it directly behind your tacoma to show how much wider the trailer is? I'm in the market to find a frame of either a m101 or m416 to build into a toy hauler

The M416s are rarer and generally more desirable due to their 7395AB4D-3E8B-4729-8B51-610D65AE4357.jpg size and weight. It’s the one I’d buy.

only issue is, I will be building one to haul up to 2 dual sport bikes, with roof rack for a kayak. I'd love a 416 for the nostalgia, but I think a 101 or 105? may be more practical. Wanting to keep the weight down though ...

Nice project. Looks good. It’s kinda like your $5.00 Taco Box. Post more pics when you get the chance.

I'm sorry it took so long to reply. No, no plans to repaint as I like the green, and it's easy to find in rattle-can. I got a grey fitted tarp for it (no pics) and like the contrast.

I think the M101a is a great size for the Taco, though it may be a bit heavy for hardcore rock crawling stuff. Mine with new axle and wheels and custom rack is still is about 1420 lbs.

Man, the M1101/1102 is a beheamoth.

37 tires, you need like an 18" upswept hitch attachment on a Pintle clip.

Reducing tires to 31" is first step, even so it's way to heavy.

If I was doing this all over, I would consider swapping the axle as it is way, way, too much.

    The 416 is highly coveted.

M416 would my choice, but that's what I have started to build... Been sitting awhile, maybe I'll finish it this winter.

I built a small popup camper on a M116A flatbed military chassis. I replaced the military axle, took out a few of the leafs, and went down in tire size, and did away with the surge brake on the pintle. All, just to get it a more level ride.

Basically turned these two trailers into one.

After new axle, smaller diameter tires, 2 leaf springs removed, and reworked pintle hitch.
