Not exactly an expedition style setup, but it's somewhat comfortable and tows real easy behind the taco. 2010 Starcraft. I have owned 3 towing vehicles, and the taco does the best job towing it by far. And the extra packing space of the bed is amazing(my first ever pickup). The wife asked me why I brought a ladder. I asked why wouldn't I...

The cap is an ARE V Series.
The manufacture told me that if I have the proper roof rack system and the tent is properly mounted and centered I should not have a problem since the ladder holds half of the weight on the ground when opened up.
I have the tent mounted to a Prinsu rack in the factory ARE roof rack rails.
No issues so far. Camped two people in it for more than 10 nights and hundreds of miles of rough Offroad driving. Even had some fun with the lady friend in it a few times. :)
I did add bed stiffeners to the bedsides though for security.

We just finished using this 7days in a row in 6 different locations. Set up and tear down is so fast.

It's the smittybuilt and I have zero complaints.

Anyone have experience with the gfc camper top or something similar? How does it affect handling, gas mileage, do you need to remove oem bars from cab?

Nice kitchen! I like the stove shelf, nice touch with the magnetic tool holder. I am curious about that cook box on the table, what is it and where did you get it?

It's a CampMate and I spent 3 years looking for one that was complete and not damaged, and also under $100.
These are like unicorns now. There was also a different brand that's all green- look them up on Google... this was sold in Cabelas in the early 2000's and VERY hard to find. I scored this for $75 and it's a solid 9+ out of 10. The cover is leaning on my camp kitchen in the pic. Mine was made by Dosko. Good hunting! It's well worth finding one.

Started out by building a platform and getting a topper, and adding a futon pad from ikea that was the perfect size - headroom was less than ideal but I didn't want to have a tall topper. Downside was hauling the mountain bikes on the roof rack, this was before I bought a hitch carrier. Pain to get them on and off. Hard to haul all the stuff you need and dogs, I only have an access cab.... and I still ended up usually setting up a tent to serve as a gear garage.
    camp2.jpg

Then I stumbled into this 16ft Casita trailer... it's pretty small, lightweight, and you can leave it packed and ready to go at a moments notice.moab.jpg

    moab2.jpg

The trailer doesn't have a hitch, so I had to relocate the bikes inside the topper... got a couple of kuat dirtbag fork mounts and it worked pretty well, and it's nice to have them fairly secure in the truck. BUT for the time being I cannot open my tailgate all of the way with the trailer attached, the jack needs to be relocated or I need a touch longer hitch. So if I wanted to hit up some trails on the way somewhere, I'd have to unhook the trailer to pull the bikes out. That wasn't going to work. And it's a pain to get stuff out of the topper without having windoors - moral of the story don't try to save any money and order your topper without windoors. Big mistake.

So it was time to topless for the summer ;) Added the yakima bike mounts and my cargo basket to a crossbar set I got off craiglist... yakima bedrock I think it's called. Works pretty slick.

This lovely campsite is the back parking lot at the hospital I work at - had to evacuate my house for a few days because it almost burned down in a wildfire that was 150 yards from my house. No structures lost, thank goodness. And it was a short commute to work for a few days!

    camp3.jpg

All loaded for a trip Telluride a few days after - bikes, paddleboards, coolers, etc etc etc. Telluride area is hands down the best area of colorado, I love going there so much to explore each time. This scenic pic was taken at the dump station outside of Telluride ;)

The instant tents are really easy. I have a larger (8 man tent) and it goes up in 5 minutes.
