Third gen spare tire/wheel

I’m not sure how someone can fit a 285/70/17 under there with no mods. I put my 285/70/17 with brand new K02 under there, and it sits way below both tabs, AND rests on the diff, along with pushing on the exhaust heat shield. I’m doing a three-way mod — doing an exhaust chop, cutting off the two tabs, AND shifting the tire elevator 1” toward the tail of the truck. There’s no way I want to hear the tire rubbing on differential all the time. (And I don’t want a rear tire holder, or in-bed storage)

 

Mine fits no issues. Maybe tire brands im running falkens

 

Maybe that’s it. Or is it a short bed/long bed thing?

 

So I plan to replace my current 265/70/16 spare with a 285/70/17 as well.

I looked down there and there and it seems to be 1" between the current spare and the muffler heat plate and maybe a 3/8" clearance on the opposite side. My new tires are 2.1" more in diameter. What am I missing?

 

Remgu - I suggest you go ahead and get the new tire and then see what happens when you put it up in there. Some people say they have zero issues, but my BFG 285/70/17 was wedged against the differential, pushed against the heat shield, and sat below the two tabs. No way that would work. You have solutions to modify that aren’t that bad. I did a more elaborate mod and moved the hanger (elevator?) toward the rear of the truck, and re-welded the exhaust hanger toward the right. All good!

Looking to do the same to mine. Do you have a pic of where you relocated the exhaust hanger?

 

I bought 4 FN F(x) rims and bought a fifth one for half price. It's my backup in the unlikely event something bad happens.

 

My 08 Taco has a TPMS in the oem spare and registered.

FYI you have to use plastic not metal stem covers as to not to interfere with signals.

 

Sorry for the dark photos. I tried to catch the exhaust hanger. I used the same location, but just moved it right a couple inches. The bigger job was moving the tire elevator pulley forward.

I have method 17" rims with BFG KO2 275/70/17's
When I tried to mount the 5th under It will not fit past the ear on either side that holds the stock one in place. It also rubs the exhaust. I will chop and grind and spray paint the ears and get an exhaust reroute while im at it.

 

The tire elevator pulley is moved forward (away from the rear bumper) to allow the tire to be away from the trailer hitch.

 

What is the max tire size that you can fit under the bed?

 

You've hit on the $1M question. Seems some will claim they can fit 285/70/17 with zero problems. Others will doubt that. I have personal experience that a 285/70/17 will NOT fit under your bed without some modifications. The modifications aren't that tough, but require some welding. They are explained earlier in this thread.

 

God, what am I smoking today! I totally have it backwards! The elevator was moved BACKWARDS to get the tire off the differential! Sorry! The tire sits right in front of the trailer hitch mount. (I haven't towed anything, so I have no idea if a ball hitch will need to slide forward against the tire!)

 

I've tried getting an answer on the TPMS thing. No one can confirm .

There is a 5th spot to program a sensor in but can't confirm if it could be rotated in without throwing a TPMS light.

I've went off road with my spare under there and it didn't get damaged. Just mount it with face of wheel up
