From my first solo back in April. Been plagued with gloomy weather and high winds here in SoCal. Has really slowed down my license. However, I should finally be taking my checkride soon.

How come? Bad experience? Or bad feeling? I’ve flown 152s, 172s, warriors and that, it’s a bit more nimble and responsive, but I’ve never felt unsafe. Once you get used to the controls it’s a lot of fun to fly.

It's the Rotax. Recently, I've heard of more Rotax failures than Lycoming/Continental

Yea they are! Nothing cooler than hitting reverse thrust. I remember geeking out over that and the electric trim when I got to fly one, yea I'm easily amuzed lol!

Reverse thrust is cool! I had electric trim for my private and instrument training so I was used to that. Haha

Nice! If I keep up my current pace, I'll be at 500 before the end of the year, which was my goal.

You're going to love it someday when you're flying for a living and in the air 750-800 hours a year!

I supposedly fly for a living and only spend about 150hrs a year in the air.

So I've been trying since April to schedule a checkride in SoCal. Of the 8 DPEs in my area only one returned any of my calls, and he needed an FAA observation before he could give any more checkrides. He scheduled me, but the date kept getting pushed back because his observation kept getting pushed back due to weather.

I got sick of waiting and decided to spend July 4th week at home in Michigan and try to finish there. The DPE was super friendly and helpful, he scheduled me 3 days before the ride. I spent a week learning a new airplane ('66 172H) which was very different from the LSA I was flying in California. While the checkride ended up being a little harder than I expected, due to new airspace, airplane, etc, I'm glad I did it. The DPE was very fair and offered me some really constructive feedback. I feel like a much better pilot because of it.

I flew KAZO-8D4 for the checkride and passed! Feels good to finally have this done! Time for some IFR training!

Congrats! If you are thinking about becoming a professional pilot, write down some notes about this event like what the situation was, what you did and why and keep it around your logbooks. A situation like this could be a great one to use to answer some situational interview questions. While it may seem way far off now, there is no limit to how far back you may find a story to answer a question.
