To states with lower tax burdens. It's a bit more complicated than I really understand, but the gist is CA gets like 90 cents back for every dollar they pay in Federal tax. States like Mississippi and Alabama get $2-3 in money from the feds for every dollar they pay in. Many low tax states also have a high poverty level, and can keep their taxes low because they get a lot of Federal aid due to this.

That I do..18 years so far at my career. I could go work in the field still but I have a pension plan at my company separate from my 401K that I don't have to pay into. That's unheard of anymore unless you're union.

I could buy a house down south outright very similar in size to mine (which is fine, my needs aren't changing) and have about 60K left over. I can afford to bring home a smaller check every week if I have no mortgage.

The revenue here would be $0 on weight lost. They would make a fortune on weight gained. Every state gets to you somehow. We have to pay tolls just about anytime we drive on a highway. But I would rather pay tolls and fuel taxes because then the people that use the roads most pay the most. Plus you gouge the people from out of state driving through :D

In OK we pay an excise tax when we purchase a vehicle.

An average value for all such model vehicles is utilized. Standard vehicle excise tax is assessed as follows: New Vehicle: 3.25% of the purchase price (or taxable value, if different) Used Vehicle: $20.00 on the 1st $1500.00 of value + 3.25% of the remainder.Jun 30, 2017

Except that state/local/federal politicians lie. Back in the day of my youth, the citizens of FL were told that the Florida Turnpike would stop collecting tolls when the bonds were paid off...... that occurred in the 1970s. It's 2018 and tolls are still being collected on it.

 yeah, they said the same thing about our first toll roads. Still, would rather pay tolls than big annual registration fees like I'm seeing here.

Personally, I prefer to drive the turnpike and pay the tolls than to deal with the higher number of drivers, and greatly increased bad drivers, on 95. In OK, RR Turnpike is a dream to drive in comparison to I-35 from OKC south to the Red River. I-40 last time I was in OK was basically a big rumble strip. I have, would, and will pay to drive a smoother road as long as the tolls are reasonable and get me to where I want to be.

Across most of the US toll roads are better maintained and use less tax dollars. I know there are exceptions to this, my opinion is based on anecdotal evidence rather than science.

This, plus let those who use that road pay the toll. Unfortunately, my state doesn't use that general logic. Such as taxation of tobacco..

And you all forget the - in purpose non synchronized traffic lights - in all major cities. Kind of "related" to somebody working for the city planning and the traffic light are in purpose not synchronized since a lot of gas is used when the vehicle is starting to move from stand still like at traffic light. The more stop-and-go, the more gas you use, the more gas tax you pay, the more money gov makes.
One example is Val Vista road (SB) from US-60 to Warner Rd. A stretch of 4 miles, with major intersection traffic lights and another 3-4 traffic lights in between, none of them in sync. Would it be so hard to sync the lights at least within 1 mile? No but that will lower the $$$$ gas tax the gov gets. And there are hundreds of examples in metro Phoenix like that.
People don't know and your gas companies, gas stations and govs are like :spending::bananadance::dancingbacon::broccoli:

I bitch about traffic lights not being synced all the time. I figured it was so the police could give out more speeding tickets as you must break the sound barrier to make it through some.
