Coil springs instead of leaf springs?

Has anyone ever thought about doing a swap in the rear for coils springs instead of leaf springs? All the new Dodge 1500 trucks are coil springs in the rear. Just curious of anyone on here has done it or thought about it ?

Them new dodges are borderline suvs, i would rather have a dakar stack of leafs in the back honestly. Its a truck!

 

Yeah I get both sides but hey if it's a better ride on road and pretty good off road thats the best of both worlds

Don’t let these people bully you. If you want coilovers in the rear it is possible.

However, like most things that are possible, it all comes down to how much money and time you are willing to put in to doing it. If you want them great, but I do not think there is any kits sold out there to do it so you are probably looking at a custom fabrication/one off job.

Well honestly the big issue that I see is stuff like... Actually how would you even do this without completely redesigning the rear?

 

Finding the geometry would be a pain. I would only bother for a rock buggy. Chop the frame, shorten wheel base and use multilink rear end with stupid long coils.

 

Doing this on the rear axle is easier if only for the fact that it doesn't have to steer so there's less geometry to engineer. I'd start with a 4Runner rear set up as an example and go from there.

 

A lot of the long travel guys do that when they go to links with coils. I might go that route one day if I get bored enough.

 

The notion of a truck having to ride like ass because it’s a truck is silly lol. When I buy 60k dollar trucks, they better ride damn good. I dig the dodge suspension when it has the airbags.

 

Some 68 Chevy trucks had coil rear Springs.
Leafs are cheap compared to coils

I’ve been planning it for a while, got my parts figured out but is about #8 on my list

 

Why do leafs have to ride rough? Mine is pretty smooth.
