Ordering a 2019 TRD Pro

I wouldn’t buy one.

Well you’ll see it. How many pro grills, lights, skids, wheels etc. do you see on this forum being installed on an OR or Sport. I get messages all the time about my parts. People are even swapping for 4Runner Pro wheels. And the grill is quite possibly the most popular OR mod on the forum. I see the snorkel being immensely popular for the OR “overland” group of folks.

It will happen, don’t be surprised if they are already making Chinese knockoffs like the grill, wheels, etc.

 

Wrong. If you read my post earlier you see the base cost for an OR is $36,500. If you add a few options that bring it up to comparison of the Pro it’s $40,500.
Best in California you’ll get for that is $38,500, period. Add $3k for lift and you’re at $41,500. Here is a list of things you’d still have to buy to come near the Pro...

Heated Leather Seats
Rigid Fog Lights
TRD Skid
Pro Wheels
Blacked out light bezels (front and rear)
Pro Grill
Hood w/ scoop (probably the most useless feature)

I won’t do the math, because it’s clearly over $2,000 in parts in labor. In my case, I’d end up spending a lot more, and wasting a lot of time (which to me is pure gold), to even come near.



You’re comparing a bare bones OR that you can’t even get at that price to a vehicle with about 15-20 more options, features and upgrades.

this is not fair comparison . Need to compare it with trd OR with tech and prem pkg. the OR I looked at had msrp of 42100 and the pro I bought was 46200 msrp. So it was 4k difference.

 

Actually your not wrong. You can’t order a Toyota in the same way you can order a car from many other manufacturers. When you “order” a car from most manufacturers, that car is actually alloted to you, personally, and built to the specs you want (as long as it’s within their options). Your put to the back of the queue, and when it’s time for your car to be built, it’s built to exactly your specs. And it actually has your name on it on the production line. Toyota allots vehicles to dealers not people, once alloted that dealer can change a few options, but not much. So what this boils down to is a dealer being alloted something close to what you asked for and catching it in time to change a few options, so it’s exactly (or close) to what you want. This is why ordering times are all over the place with Toyota when people *think* they have actually ordered a car, when all they have been given is a dealer allotment, and the dealer is waiting for something close to be allotted to them.

Perhaps. I just pulled up the msrp of both trucks as DCSB autos. Either way, the base OR is effectively the same truck as the Pro minus Fox suspension. That’s the only performance adding modification that actually makes the Pro a better truck. The rest of that stuff is just fancy fluff and cosmetics that don’t add to the performance value of the truck.

 

True. And they come to the dealer with options preloaded for your geographical location that the dealers think are appropriate. So don’t be surprised if your Pro shows up with a snorkel straight from the factory. You’re in the desert after all.
Guess you can pass if it’s a deal breaker.

 

This is what I went through to get my 2018 Pro. I called a shit load of places to learn this. You can call around to see if they are being allocated any. The places that sold 2018s might get a 2019 allocation. I found dealers with an allocation and then compared prices to decide where to get it. Good luck.

 

Base OR is missing a ton of tech features that are very useful.

Nobody said they were mechanically different.

And I quite enjoy my Fox setup that’s tuned specifically for my truck.

Skid plate, alloy wheels, Rigid fog lights, and leather heated seats are all function and performance related and some are necessary for hitting the dirt or going off grid. Tech helps too in that regard.

 

What this boils down to, is your dealer actually being truthful with you, some will take your order and down payment and say your car has been ordered. But your not actually ording shit from Toyota, you are paying for that dealer to be alloted something close and for them to assign it to you.

 

I for one am very happy I did not waste money on the pro. Sorry just got back from this trip . PUMPED

 

The difference would be more than 4k, you are going to pretty much have to pay sticker price for a Pro and you can get a couple grand off an Off Road.

I put a deposit down at a large dealership in July 2017 for a 2018 Pro. The deposit only puts you on the "list" of customers waiting for a pro at that dealership. Dealerships are allocated their vehicles. If the list has 10 people on it and they only get 4 Pro's, and your number 5, then your SOL. I waited until Feb to get the call that they had my truck. Shit went south and I told them to pound sand. They will try to tell you that you have to get upgrades like additional tinted windows or clear bra. All BULLSHIT!!!! walked away from that deal and started stalking AUTOTRADER like a madman. Had another one lined up within a week. So you can choose your path. Put a thousand down at some stealership and lock in your "place in line" or wait until they start hitting the lots and find the one your looking for. Your choice. You can alway take the route that many here suggest, But I do not regret buying my truck at all. They are literally 1 in a 100 of the 3rd gens you see.

 

The only thing I’ll agree with is the grille. And people buy knock offs which are only a fraction of the cost. Anything else is just, well plain stupid. Paying $1000+ for headlights when you can retrofit some that’ll be nicer and better quality is the way to go. The wheels I see the most are the 4Runner TRD Pro wheels. Everything else is just

Paying thousands of dollars more for a TRD Pro makes no sense when you can buy a TRD OR/Sport and make it a more capable and better riding truck. Sure, if you have the money get what you want! If you wanna pay thousands more though to have that cool badge on the door then that’s your thing I guess there’s no pro to the Pro

 

What tech features is the OR missing? All those components you just listed you can get on OR at a fraction of the cost of a Pro still
The heated seats..don’t know how that helps for going’s off the grid but that comes on an OR with the tech package.

 

Whoever is paying 42k for a tech package OR is kinda they go for 34-35k here

 

OP- I agree........get the truck you want. If you want the Pro, get it. I disagree that the suspension is the only value added feature between OR and Pro. There are many pro options that many of us OR owners have upgraded to that may not improve performance but add value and satisfaction in our eyes. I didn’t want the uncertain wait time to get the Pro. But I settled for non-tech OR because I couldn’t fit in the OR with sunroof. Not a problem with the Pro. Also, all of the upgrades we all make, even if Pro parts, likely won’t increase value at time of trade-in. Pro will retain the value. And, as another post mentioned, they’re 1 in a hundred 3rd gens on the road. It’s just if you are willing to part with an extra $5-7k and willing to accept the uncertainty of the wait. I know this wasn’t your question, but it seemed like many here were critical of decision to pursue a Pro. To each his own.

I'm bathing luxuriously in the Pro hate, tossing $4,000-$9000 (by your excellent estimates) of wasted silver dollars in the air and letting them rain down on my head (that is incidentally cradled in a lovely leather seat with moonroof free extravagant headroom)

Now, back to OP: Find a nearby dealership with an allocation for the Pro you want, and throw some money down on that baby. (Consider the MT, it's awesome). Don't look back. You'll feel more than $10,000 cooler than these smug OR upgrading losers (especially when their got-danG 'ol moonroof starts leaking). Trust me. I mean, who puts a moonroof on an offroad rig? Holes in roofs are for sportscars and limos.

OP, if you’re wanting the pro, get what you want, not what others want for you. Toyota operates on allocation, so “ordering” is a term loosely used. Find a dealer that you can put a deposit down on, and yes, you can get them to agree on paper for a set OTD price, with any or zero accessories you want. I had the deal hashed out in writing, several months later when it arrived, it was a quick process with no issues. Finding the dealership to work with will be the hardest part.
