Hi all, new here and this is my first post. Sorry if this is the wrong section.

So I just picked up my brand new 2018 TRD Off-Road (60 miles in the odo). I noticed when I turn the A/C on the rpms begins to oscillate at idle between 600-1000. Now I opted for the dual zone A/C. I've tried changing the fan speed. And when I turn the A/C off the idle rests at about 700ish.

I mentioned this to the dealer and they said it was normal. I was just curious if this is common across the board with the Tacoma?

Again first post, and this is my first Tacoma, and first brand new vehicle I can call my own. I've been checking the site out for a few months and I have noticed some very helpful feed back, so I appreciate any advice you all have to offer.

sounds normal. typically when the A/C clutch engages it needs more RPM, thats why it kicks up when you turn on the A/C

Right, I expected the rpms to jump up a little, but the rpms are not steady. Is oscillating every 5 or 10 seconds. Is that normal too?

Sorry if I'm repeating myself, I just want to be certain

Mine jumps then slowly goes down the jumps again every 10 seconds or so.

That's completely normal to have an increase in RPM when the AC kicks in, a 300 RPM fluctuation is minimal and there's nothing to worry about. Sleep easy and welcome to our club!

How about posting some pics of your rig, we'd love to see it.

yeah I think it does that as the clutch engages and disengages when the A/C is on. If it does it when its off its prob something not right. Listen for a click sound when your A/C is on and when it clicks off it should drop rpms a bit.

That's great to hear, that definitely puts my mind at ease. And that's exactly the case, once I turn the a/c off the rpms rest at 600ish

Pics are on the way, it's dark here and it's a black truck but first thing in the morning it's going to be a photo shoot. Other then that idle I've loved all 100 miles I've driven so far.

Hey thanks guys, I honestly wasn't expecting a reply until the morning. I appreciate the welcome and the advice.

Yup, perfectly normal. Although I will say the Taco idle with AC on varies more than any other vehicle I’ve owned. Then again, all the other vehicles I’ve owned would be eligible for classic car plates now.
