I'm not Britt, but maybe I can give you nice folks some pointers.

Get a nice sized container, something like a IBC tote. Preferably a 300-350gal 304 stainless steel IBC with a sloped bottom and 2" ball valve discharge. Opt for the center discharge if you can, but side discharge will work too. Just not as safe. Too easy to kick open the valve. While you're at it, make sure you cover the discharge oriface with a dust cap. Make sure the manway is fitted with a PSV with suitable cracking pressure.

Think: safety.

Also go ahead and pick up 200-300lbs of 50% strength dry sodium hydroxide. Stay at 50% strength or less; if you use a higher strength sodium hydroxide, like 80%, you're going to need a polyethylene container instead. Dry powder or pellet sodium hydroxide is easier to handle and somewhat safer than aqueous.

Why sodium hydroxide? It's high alkalinity will destroy the bonds of proteins, particularly disulfide bridges. The hydroxide anion is a strong proton acceptor, the saponification of which converts organic molecules into simpler molecules with lower melting points (e.g. triglycerides are turned into fatty acids, saturated fats are dehydrogenated to form unsaturated fats, alkanes become alcohols, etc). Sodium hydroxide is also a ready source of the sodium ion, and sodium salts are water-soluble. Thus, the resulting compounds are either liquids or water-soluble alcohols and salts, which flush down and out of the IBC discharge. Whatever calcium remains will be solid, albiet brittle, and easier to discard.

You want to exit this endeavor the same way you entered it, if not better, so focus on safety. PPE should include chemical splash goggles and face shield, and butyl rubber or Viton gloves, apron, and boots. You do not want to get sodium hydroxide on you, regardless of strength.

Anyway, onto the practical application.

Unbolt and remove the manway clamp ring. Open the top manway. Dump about 100-150lbs of dry sodium hydroxide into the IBC, taking great care not to spill any on the top of the IBC and none on yourself (you remembered to wear your PPE, right?). Once the 100-150lbs of sodium hydroxide has been poured, you're now free to dump whatever solids you want into the IBC. Take note that the diameter of the IBC manway is approximately 23", so you're going to have to do some prep work and parcel a large solid mass into appropriately sized pieces. Smaller pieces are easier to handle than larger pieces, anyways. Keep your head away from the manway because at this point that sodium hydroxide is exothermically reacting with not only the carbon dioxide in the air but also with whatever it's in contact with, releasing heat and sodium oxide vapors. Definitely not something you want to inhale. Once you've dumped whatever solids you had into the IBC, carefully but quickly dump another 100-150lbs of sodium hydroxide into the IBC. Leave the IBC unsealed; you don't want to overpressurize and rupture the IBC, do you?

At this point you can walk away for a day or two depending on the mass to be dissolved. If you have the time, longer is better.

Now disposal can be handled in two ways. First, the 304 stainless steel IBC should be DOT UN31A compliant, which means it's permitted to transport hazardous or flammable waste. If this is your preferred method of disposal, reseal the IBC using the manway and clamp ring. Call up your favorite shipping company, and have them pick up your tote and deliver it to some shitty village in Iraq.

Your second option is water. A lot of water. If you have easy access to a water or fire hose, even better. Use the water to wash down the contents of the IBC using the 2" discharge as a drain. Have pride in your work and get the inside nice and clean. Eventually, you'll have to deal with whatever calcium solids are at the bottom of your clean IBC, but the hard part is done.

Final step is to sit on your favorite lawn chair, open a beer, take a sip of said beer, and marinate in the satisfaction of

1. a job well done; and,
2. accomplishing more in a few days than @scocar has done in years of Tacoma ownership.
