So even though I was driving my last manual transmission for 20 years, now I have a 3rd gen and am reading about how to drive and be as easy on the clutch as possible. One thing I've noticed is that shifts themselves are pretty smooth, but much of the time when I depress the clutch pedal I don't get the quick drop in RPM's before shifting that I'm used to. With this 3rd gen it seems that the RPM's stay pretty high and drop slowly until I shift. So the sensation I'm getting is that the clutch is still spinning pretty rapidly when I shift and it just feels like its a clutch burning burning environment. Otherwise I can hold the pedal in until the RPM's settle down but that's bad too. I know it's hard to describe but does this sound normal?

Yes, this is normal for the drive-by-wire throttle on this truck.

It is normal for the 3rd gen V6 M/T, yes. You'll see it referred to as rev hang.
Manufacturers have been doing this intentionally for a number of years now, it's supposed to help with emissions.

Thanks MOC, that article is exactly what I'm describing. And yes, sometimes the RPMs even feel like they are increasing for a short time. The whole thing really does make for a lack of quick shifting if I want to be easy on the clutch. At least I know I'm not alone.

Does anyone know if the Ovtune could help with this?

It has been brought up in the OVtune M/T thread a few times, but TBH there's a mixed reaction to eliminating it.

On the one hand, some say "it's not a race car, who cares?". Then there are those who find it annoying to varying degrees.

Wait, there is a third camp who say it's just the mass of the flywheel.

Anyway, I recall Mat (the master tuner) posting that he'd found the code or table etc that controls this. IIRC he's not said directly that he's altered rev hang though.

Can it be done? I believe it can, but we'll have to wait and see.

@iexc , you up for asking him again lol?

Was gonna say a bunch of stuff and then remembered people like different things, and I like that we all like different things, and I support people chasing their different Tacoma related things. As weird or futile as it is. For the life of me I do not get adding MORE sway bars. Dicking around with engine parameters. And feverishly trying to turn this truck into a giant road-trucking Miata. Especially remembered some people here who are obsessed with that are some of my favorite posters. I feel like I want to help you guys so badly but really all I can do is drive you to the nearest Mazda dealership and help you make bad decisions. You don’t even need to pay for gas, I got you fam. That’s the kind of friend I am.

This thing does have a heavy flywheel. In fact, URD offers an even heavier flywheel for crawling and bigger tires and such. But for the 2nd gen, they also offer a lightweight flywheel, probably aimed at those with a supercharger. I think that's probably what some people on here really want, so perhaps they will make it for the 3rd gen once we see some FI kits come out.

.. and more than a few times, the zany things ppl ask for in the tune threads end up uncovering things that make things better for all who are tuned. Dicking with engine parameter things.

    Because things.

We are obsessed, that's for sure.

The miata is THEE answer. Always wanted one and thoroughly enjoyed the one drive that I had in a friend's NA. My soon-to-be 16yr old really likes them, annnnnnd the NBs have some really great prices right now.

I don't find it offensive in my 2008, it's pretty similar to my old 22R-E with the dash pot functioning. I once took that off my throttle body and having it slam shut was actually worse. The long throw of the W56 shifter and heavy flywheel meant that it was pretty tough to row through gears fast enough to rev match and the RPMs would be at idle too fast. So I put it back in.

But they may be getting more aggressive with it and I've haven't tried a 3rd gen. We bought a 2017 Forester with a stick shift and the revs hang there so long it's almost like a stuck cruise control. Subaru actually remapped their engine to reduce it under an optional TSB. We had it done it's pretty similar to my 1GR now.

I made fun of them a lot. Until I drove a track beast for about a minute, they’re cool as hell.

Yeah. A lot of folks laugh that I want one. But then, most folks don't understand MTs.

It's not though. It's been shown that the throttle response in neutral is different than when in gear, clutch in or out. @MOC221_

This isn't really 'bad' for anything except a throwout bearing. If your pedal is in enough that the clutch is disengaged, you aren't burning anything.

Like others have already said, rev hang is super bad on pretty much every modern MT. If you want to solve this problem, you can either turn your AC on full blast, or get a sportbike!

All this said, this is a truck, not a race car, and you don't really need to shift quickly in 90% of circumstances, IMO.

I noticed the same revving, but I figured out how to stop it...

Try taking your foot off the accelerator a second or two before you push in the clutch. For me, this stops the revving completely.
