Factory radio swap

We have it in my wife's van and i've been spoiled listening to it so now i'm hooked. I have a 70 mile commute every day so it would be nice to have it in my truck.

 

heck yeah...

I spend hours and hours a day in my patrol car and miss it greatly...

may have to look into a mobile unit soon, hahaha

 

You wouldn't happen to be partial to letting that unit go, would you? I have the satellite module that this one is lacking. It'd be great to have a use for it!

 

I'd be happy to sell the radio, however you can't run an XM module on it...

The factory programing won't allow it.

Lots of folks buy the XM radios though and realize they need the XM unit and that wiring pigtail...

You could try and sell it.

Better off going aftermarket. Really easy to swap head units. Buy a wiring harness and it pretty much plug and play.

 

Totally agree, so much more capability (Android Auto/Apple car play), better sound, far better and prettier interface, etc.

 

Yea, I'm thinking that's what i'll do now too...or just buy an XM receiver since all i really want is that.

 

Pick up some speakers while your at it. You will thank yourself later for it.

I do not post very much, but I can give you some advice about what you want to. The Tacoma was not prewired for xm radio until 2009. I purchased a oem radio with xm on ebay. I then purchased the xm radio from Toyota
in Katy Texas along with a fit kit. I the discovered you have to have a dash wiring harness for one wire from radio to the drivers kick panel. I was able locate a wrecked Tacoma with the harness which cost $ 400.00 for the one wire. The I found you needed a rear wiring harness to go from the kick panel to the xm radio and the antenna. I was able to get the wrecking yard to give it to me, but his would usually not happen. The I needed an antenna, the small one. Remember you only need one wire from each harness. Had to cut hole in roof to mount antenna.
I was in for about $ 1,400.00 before it was installed. It got me what I wanted which was a stock radio and it works fine as it is oem. I do not know if anyone is as anal as I was but this is the process. Hope this helps.

 

$1400 is ridiculous for a stock setup that still sounds horrible. You could have aftermarket with XM and paid for install for less than that.

 

They make dash kits for aftermarket radios. They are like $50 or something like that. Just get the radio that you like

 

Man you can get old Fujitsu-10 ECLIPSE head units for nothing now. Search ebay for eclipse AVN, its modular, so sirius/xm module is extra, last lot i bought i think i paid $35 each. If you get in a bind for one i prob have an extra i can spare.

 

FWIW, I have a 2010 and had the stock head unit with the factory XM module and factory antennae.

I had nothing but trouble from the stock head unit. It would randomly shut off and randomly switch from mode to mode (Sat to FM to AM). It was replaced multiple times under warranty (each replacement suffering the same issues) before I finally got sick of it and replaced with an aftermarket Kenwood head unit.

I now have car Apple car play, dual USB chargers, integrated satellite, GPS, and Bluetooth for hands free phone use. I also sourced the factory steering wheel switches so everything works from the steering wheel as it should.

All in (including all wiring harnesses and switches), I am well under $1,000. Probably closer to $700.

 

Holy crap!! That's alot of work and $$$ for a stock radio with XM. I think I'll just got aftermarket and be done with it.

 

That's awesome, do you mind sharing what model Kenwood you have??

 

Sorry - was at work. It is a Kenwood DDX 9903S. Bought the head unit and wiring harness pre assembled from Crutchfield.

If you already have the factory satellite antenna, all you need is the wire from the kick panel to the radio. It has a Lexus part number - I forget which, but it is on here somewhere.
