Trade in for a 4x4 or stick with what I got?

So about two months after I bought my '08 Tacoma (yesterday) I found a sweet looking 4x4 black Access Cab with only 20k miles on it (also an '08). I currently have an indigo ink automatic access cab and almost immediately thought "I want to trade my truck in for that." The problem is, I've only made two truck payments thus far and still have about $11k left on my auto loan. Would it be worth trading in my current Tacoma for this new one? Would I be better off just waiting to pay off my truck (3 years) before thinking about getting another one?

 

Here are pictures of what I'm driving right now and what I'm looking at... The only reason I really went with automatic was because my old man was telling me that it wasn't worth getting a manual and I would hate having to drive it around in the city (I'm moving into an apartment there tomorrow, but will commute on the highway to work). Also, I live in upstate NY so we do get quite a bit of snow in the winter (might be a problem with 4x2). I'm really looking to hear from someone else who has been in this position, thanks!

 

Seems like you might be better off with the snow. If you think you will be okay driving a manual whether in the city or not then I say do it.

 

That's another thing, I have never driven a manual before, but since I got my truck I've kind of been messing around with the manumatic quite a bit, especially when trailering stuff (I know...I kind of feel like a tool doing it too.)

 

I live in Atlanta, Ga with a Manuel tranny, u will get use to it. I say go for the 4X4 while you got the chance, especially with snow driving. Just my 2€

 

I'd get the 4wd personally, I wish I would've. Don't get me wrong, the rear locker on my truck is awesome but its not the same as a 4x4 by any means

you most definitely get used the the manual trans. sometimes when your tired you'd rather not shift, but it keeps you awake!
and 4x4 is a big advantage in my books, go for it! you only live once

 

I think you're going to get hammered on your payments if you get the 4x4 after just having your truck for 2 months. If you don't mind that then get the 4x4.

 

if you don't lose your ass on the trade in i'd say go for it... 4x4 is awesome.

It will feel like a much faster truck too with the 4.10 rear end.
However, if you worry about gas mileage it won't get nearly as good as yours!

 

I'm in the same dilemma now. Trade in my 07 Prerunner for 4wd or keep it. Hmmm... I voted trade it in

 

You should know if you need 4x4 in upstate NY. I managed several winters there in Endicott with two wheel drive but 4x4 would have been much better.

See how bad the new payment will be.

Stick vs auto? I prefer auto but stick is fine too.

 

i have the same truck as u, and i wouild like to have what your looking at.

but im gonna stick it out and when i can afford it down the road ill upgrade to something 4x4. i live in newfoundland canada, and have gone through a couple alberta winters with this truck as well and its not that bad.

4x4 would be a dream, but with some tires and weight in the bed our trucks do somewhat good. i wouldnt take it on the back roads alone, but to drive around town and on the highway its fine cuz there mostly plowed and sanded/salted anyways.

if your not gonna get killed on the lost value then go for it, but keep in mind the worse mileage, more expensive insurance, and most likely higher payments

edit: also about the trans. shifting from L-2-3-d is nothing like a manual. the clutch is something you should get used to before buying. at least know how to use it. dont wanna be in the city stalled in the intersections cuz you cant start due to not being used to driving standard.

Did you take your truck by the seller and see what kind of deal you could get?

 

I'll probably go by this weekend... just found some dings in my drivers side quarter panel today so I'm not too pleased about that. Hopefully I can get a decent trade in on it.
