A lot of people have have similar stories. When I was young I went by this house every day after school and in it's driveway was '67 Camaro SS convertible, red & white, a dream machine. One day it was pouring rain and I knocked on the door and a little old lady answered and I asked her if she would sell it. She said "O no, it's a collectors item". I told her, lady. the tops ripped, it's filling up with water and the floorboards are rusting out. But she wouldn't budge, so I got back on my bicycle and rode away.

 

With the same hand she could scratch your back and give you a hand job at the same time.

 

Some people are weird, but the weirdest deal was a guy I knew and worked with had a nice survivor 63 VW bug. It wasn't perfect, but it had never been repainted, wrecked, rusted, or modified. The interior was tatty and the engine was tired. I always left it open that if he wanted to sell just to let me know. He had several other people that planted the seed that if he sold to give them a heads up. The guy decides out of the blue one day to just trade it in at a new car dealer and of course gets properly rooted in the process. He admitted that he got $500 for it, but they got me an affordable payment on a new car was all he could say. I remember clearly offering him $3k.

 

Yeah, there was an older lady renting a duplex down the street from me who had plain jane green auto '69 Firebird parked on the street. Years ago some kids were driving around throwing river rocks through car windows and they hit hers. Went through the back window, bounced on something then into the front window. She duct taped a piece of plastic over the holes, but it didn't last long. I saw her outside and stopped to talk, offered to help seal it better, but she said no thanks. It rained and rained all winter, right into the car. She had the same story - "collector car" and she planned on selling it one day to fund her retirement. That thing was so rusty throughout I doubt she could get much for it.
