Your effective antenna length is only the part of the antenna that is above the roof line.

Any metal next to the antenna will absorb signal, effectively shortening the antenna.

I originally got a 2" so I could leave it on the truck and have it fit in and out of the garage. Then had plans to get a 4 foot one for trail use. However, the 2" performed pretty well on the trail in a group of 10ish trucks so i think ill leave it for now.

Eventually, I will mount a 4 foot antenna on my bed stiffener. Decided I don't want one that big on the hood hinge where my antenna is currently mounted.

They did mine a few months ago. $275 to dig and pump. Then we found out the bright asses that bought the house originally had planted two huge trees on top of the septic tank. I had already cut them both down but the stumps were still there. When they got the stumps out of the way and got it uncovered someone back then had drove over the tank and messed up the lids. So then they had to put extensions and new caps on both cleanouts. All in all for all that and removing 2 stumps it was $575. Feel like that was a pretty good deal overall.

That’s the tune part not the peak part. Unless with the 520’s you can’t peak them. They will put out more power than rated easily.

About 18”. They quoted it without seeing it. Base price was $250-275 to dig and clean out.

Yeah if you use your CB on the road getting it peaked can help range but I only use mine off-roading so factory range is more than enough.

I get that. My Dad made a shorter whip for his roof-mounted K40 antenna, so it would fit in the garage. He just swapped it out for a longer one for our trips when he needed greater range. I always intended to do the same, but just use the 4' whip.

Also, the more centered the antenna is on your truck, the more omni-directional your transmit/receive pattern will be. Since the truck is the ground plane, the mass of metal affects the signal - where more mass is, there is more signal. Mounting on the rear will send the majority of your signal forward. Yes, you can still communicate with people behind you, but you will get more distance going forward.

I got one that installs out of the way and has enough power. Link
Scroll down the page a bit. Note that I screwed up and cut out too much of the lower console (clearly seen where the tape is under the CB).

Been updating my CB today cause I’m tired of the magnetic antenna getting knocked off. I made a bracket and installed the 4’er I’ve had for months. I Still need a longer UHF cable. I can’t decide where to mount the radio. Not crazy about drilling mounting holes and splicing into a power wire. Keeping it in the console gives me power and it’s removable.82F2941D-A569-42A4-88DB-3F0EEF58CD09.jpg 4612331E-DF1D-412E-9F64-581590442D6B.jpg 1D5AAB83-A80C-4D9E-BC85-2511194D9653.jpg 8EFE1FC0-AD12-436C-9A46-5F6E097C44B7.jpg

did you ever put the magnet antenna on your hood? I thought that would be ideal to not get knocked off.

Right in the middle of the hood seemed to be the best place but it still got knocked off a few times. It was annoying to have it in my line of sight too.
