To be Clear Spanker 67 we are talking about a 2 wheel drive? That bing the case this is not the right truck for the job, and you keep slipping that clutch to the point you can smell it. I am pretty sure Warranty will not pay for a burnt Clutch.

Sorry... if you fry a clutch on any vehicle, you need to get an auto trans. If you smell burnt clutch, you are doing something you shouldn't be doing. If you can't back your trailer up your driveway... borrow your neighbors full size truck to do it. Not the trucks fault, your fault.

My Frontier Pro-4x has a steep reverse gear too. Now that I'm used to it I can reverse a trailer right where I want it, and fast.

From my understanding. The 3rd Gen RC62F Transmission is used in other Toyota Products such as the Hilux. If said truck is equipped with the diesel, the low end torque of that type of motor allows it to move more easily in reverse than with a 3.5 gas engine.

    1. this thread is 1 year old

    2. It has nothing to do with low end engine torque. 1st gear transmission ratio is 3.98 with a final drive ratio of 17.114. Reverse is 3.39 wiht a final drive of 14.557. Thats better than 1st gear in the AT. Power = torque * angular speed.

Same solution I found. When backing a trailer just put it in 4lo most times I’m going n grass or gravel anyway

    1. What's your point

    2. More torque means you don't have to slip the clutch as much if backing uphill for example.

    1. It's irrelevant to respond to something so old because OP probably moved on.

    2. Again, engine torque is irrelevant. This is why our trucks can have up to 6000 ft/lbs of torque with reduction gears. This is why you can crawl a Tacoma up huge inclines at idle. The diesel vs gasoline argument is laughable. I'm not arguing, that's just how the entire drive system works.

Hey guys. I am really frustrated by the reverse gear ratios as well. This might be silly but is it possible to re-gear the reverse ratio? I would love for it to be about half of what it is out of the factory

I have an automatic and am glad I saw your post.
I was out wheeling and went to reverse up a really steep incline and it was almost like it was in limp mode once I got to steeper grade (no tire slippage).
Was really thinking something was wrong with my truck but must just be bad engineering.

Would require a lot of custom parts that nobody makes to swap the gears. The easiest thing would be to go for lower rear diff ratio or smaller tires.

Like others have said, you could put in 4Lo and reverse. Or, get the 2WDLo mod when it's back in stock.
