Hey Coloradians, I'm from Texas and have been planning a trip to the Alpine Loop. I'm supposed to start driving up there tomorrow or the next day, but the weather is looking pretty wet...

Are there any passes up there that would be potentially shut down due to all of this rain? It would suck to drive up there and not be able to check out the loop. Any advice from you natives would be greatly appreciated. Also suggestions for alternatives? Thanks so much

I was just reading about closures on the Facetubes, I can't remember what off highway passes were closed but there are a couple now. Keep in mind this is FJ Summit weekend so the traffic will be like city living with stop and go driving.

    Have Fun!

Like @thefatkid said, there have been closures, most have been opened back up that i've seen, but likely to be more with rain and slides.

As far as stuff in the area, use trailsoffroad.com to find stuff that is in the range of what you want as far as difficulty, area and scenery along the way.

3x the towing rating. I'd go ahead and suggest you dont do that again... my 2x experiment wasn't intentional... loader put a ton more wet sand than I wanted and I wouldnt do it again. And I didnt have traffic or pedestrians or stop lights to worry about. Think about your transmission meng!

The south side is mostly pull offs and overlooks, though many of them have short hikes to get out to the overlook. Go early, fewer people and it's cooler. Also, you want to hit them as you go out rather than go to the end and come back, else you're turning across traffic all the time. There's a short hike at the end of the road that gets you some views. I'd also recommend driving down to the bottom (most roads in the state have nothing on the grade on that one), and you can do a short walk up the road (that you can't drive) to the base of the dam. The north side has some views down into the canyon, but it's not developed at all compared to the south side and there aren't as many places to see in.

If you're going to dedicate a day and you're in shape, there's three hiking routes to the bottom on each side. I've done two of them, and they were both cool. They are more climbs than hikes though (think stairmaster). You have to get a permit, but it's self serve at the ranger station even if nobody is there - limited number of people though. The most popular route on the south side, you'll most likely see people. On the north side, you may not.

Two things in the area I'd suggest as options. There's the Morrow Point boat tour, which takes you on the stretch between two of the dams. Also there's another short at Curecanti Creek from Pioneer Point (this is near where 92 and 50 join). It also takes you from the top to the bottom, but it's not nearly as steep/deep at that point. There are more people, but I always enjoy doing that hike. There's also a small train museum in Cimmaron, with another hike along the river there that has fewer people.

Tow ratings are strictly a measure for manufacturer warranties. They are not a legal measure for towing loads. DOT only cars about GVWR and GAWR. So you could conceivably dingy tow 26klbs with a geo metro without any added licensing and be legal.

Stay safe with your new tow rig. :D

Edit: might be 24999 or 25999. I can't remember now

    What hasn't been modified?
Yea. Pulled it from Franktown to parker and way to much tong weight with the skid backwards so had to turn it around to center the weight on the trailer axles. Even when we got loaded with rock, had the loader keep it over the axles as much as possible

Oh god, I did not know about the FJ Summit. Have you ever been during that time? I'm planning on being there the 15th through the 18th or 19th. Looks like FJS is 18th to 22nd, so maybe it won't be too awful? Hopefully there are places to camp that don't require reservations. Thanks a ton for the info.

You can throw a rock in any direction and hit a primitive camp spot at a minimum. Or a squirrel. Just keep in mind any fire bans that are in place.

Actually, going during the FJ Summit may be a good thing...you can connect with other enthusiasts and get a lay of the land.

I just ran this last weekend. You should be fine, but here's the San Juans Forest Service office number - that's an even better place to check the trailsoffroad

    San Jauns - (970) 247-4874
    Silverton field office - (970) 387-5530

Edit: Forgot to add the number.

We just did Alpine Loop last week. Came down Imogene in the rain. It was awesome and refreshing for sure! just kept it in low gear and left some extra space for wet/loose rock. wasnt bad at all though.

CANT WAIT TO GO BACK TO COLORADO!! :goingcrazy:

I just came down from Engineer Mountain, raining pretty good, but brief. I'd be surprised if there were any closures this week, but as mentioned above, its busy with the FJ summit on the Ouray side.
