    IMO, hammers are for beating on something that doesn't really fit, or maybe taking out some aggression. I don't resort to "brute force" until necessary.

    The pitman arm puller works much more easily (IMO), and seems to be more of a "precision" tool.

    I know plenty of pro mechanics use the method, I just prefer to use a method where I'm not beating the snot out of my truck to "fix" it, lol.

    Whatever... do what works for you. If one method doesn't work, they another...

    Blew a cv boot and needed to replace lbjs with an unknown amount of miles. Yeah I probably did a few things wrong with the hammering, could’ve left it bolted to the knuckle and had the spring put pressure on it...oh well. I’m also not a fan of beating on components like a control arm, god forbid it gets bent out of shape, even though that’s very unlikely.

    Pitman puller took It off first try. Thanks for all your guys help. New ball joint and axle in no problems, hope the seal doesn’t leak. Only time will tell.

    Now to do the other side.

    Side note, what is the torque spec for the axle nut? The sheet I have says like 100ft lbs or so, that seems low...

    Mostly because big hammers are cheap. If I could afford quality tools I would in a heartbeat. This is just a hobby for me though. Not even a daily driver.

    WTF. I rented a tool a few weeks ago from my local O'Reilly's & they specifically told me I had 48 hrs to return it, even said it on the receipt. But prior to that, last time I rented a tool which was years ago, from the same store they didn't tell me anything & I don't remember if it said anything on the receipt. Doesn't matter though, I usually return the same day anyway. I hate short return deadlines!

    Not sure about Autozone, they don't have a whole lot of rental tools in stock but the store closest too my house is new.

    Not only that, using a hammer is much quicker & is why many mechanics don't use pullers. That's how I was taught when I started working at a shop. Also pullers are generally universal, they don't always work for every vehicle & can damage boots. They also don't last long in a shop, they get abused and break. Unless the shop speciallizes in certain makes/models so they will have make/model specific pullers. But on some vehicles you do need to use them to avoid damage, 1st gen Taco is not one of them. ;)

    Sounds liike you have never rented a tool from a auto parts chain store. When you rent a tool, you have to pay for the tool up front, full price for the tool. Then when you return the tool within the allowed rental period they refund you back the entire amount. That way if it's never returned, you already purchased the tool.

    Maybe they never told me about a deadline to return the tools, or maybe I missed it. Either way, I never kept a tool longer than a day or so anyway.
