The Swing Case was on my radar for a while. My plans for the back of the truck have since changed and there won't be room for something like that.

Mines working great, looks better now that the beds been hurculined haha. I have a decent amount of weight in there. Manufacturer recommends a max of 75lbs.

I know the Undercover Swingcase is not made for 1st gens, but brackets can be altered to make it work.

I can’t say much for other manufacturers, but it all just looks like universal mounts, where you drill into your bed.

I like the tailgate mod concept, I have a swing out tailgate now, that needs a cover to enclose the bed, why not just add some boxes and have the whole thing swing down as a table top/storage

Just remove the spare tire and create a box under the bed that can be accessed through a hatch up top

Yes, was just thinking this myself!! I am sure you could make use of some of the extra space under the bed to fit a tool box.

I also thought it would be cool to build a rear bumper with a small tool box incorporated into it. Or somehow incorporate one into the stock bumper. More room than a tailgate and shouldnt be hard to do.

That space is reserved for future use, e.g., fuel cell, water storage, on-board air tank.

I mean if you build a box the size the bottom of the bed you can store the fuel cell and what not in there so that way it stays all protected then on the end near the tail gate just leave enough space to store stuff. Could do two hatches. One just for the small storage area and another to access everything else

The more I think about it the more I think the bumper could very easily be fabbed to make one or 2 small toolboxes. This plus tailgate storage would be a fair bit of space for different gear.

The space is friendly, it can share! But I hear ya, I'm debating what needs to go there too... I like the thought of a more luxurious camping arrangement in the bed which would eliminate all the storage space. Have access through a bottom hatch doesn't seem like a terrible idea to make up for it though!

Man, I still am really liking this idea. Of course it's be nice to not have to take off the camper shell to access something like this.

I'm really enjoying seeing your progress @2BeersPlease this tailgate mod is coming along great. Solid work!

I think i saw something similar to that on like west cost customs, on a tundra. But instead of the top opening the whole bed side fliped up and there was storage in there. But that was hella custom.

I just bought a 2nd tailgate with the intent of hacking it up to do something similar and then stumbled across this thread.

    Bump and sub’d.

I’ll post pics if I don’t completely scrap my spare tailgate...

That name shall not be spoken here, good sir.

But I wouldn't mind having one as a primary vehicle and keep the Tacoma for fun stuff.

Please do. This project got sidelined, but I'm hoping to get it done by the end of summer. I think I'm going to try a 1" lid to add a little more volume to the space.

I've seen a video of a guy who installed a rear bumper for a customer that had two storage spaces in it. I think it was an Aluminess bumper.

Didn't find the video, but found this pic on Expedition Portal.

Yeah, that's what I mean. Seems like a good place to put stuff, if you could figure out how to seal it so water won't come in.

for what it's worth: I used these for door recess storage in my gmc savana van https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001GCUCS6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

they are incredibly strong & well built. almost 3/32" thick & the flange was perfect for #6 oval head screws. not carried by the big A apparently, but there are similar products in a plethora of sizes and depths (cookie sheets and baking pans as shallow as 2").

so while it does not eliminate the water ingress, it does offer some containment for whatever is stored and some strengthening for the cut-out. just drill a weep hole for anything that gets in to get out.
