Our AC system SUCKS

I’m actually disappointed to hear the fan doesn’t do much, ive been contemplating that mod for a while. So far ive just mde some mods to guide the airflow through the condenser and radiator, but that only helps when driving. Ive serviced my a/c a few times in the few years, and every time i recover the same amount of freon, so i know its not a leak issue. Its just a crappy Tacoma a/c Florida summer heat issue.

 

Have you cleaned the evaporator core? An '08 could be pretty scummed up by now.

 

this brackets are up for grabs. keeping the fans. got rid of the truck. I'm seeing posts of adding fans don't work that is not true. they do . add them . at idle they did make a big difference . and you will need to rev the rpms to 1000 for better results. adding those two fans added 2000cfm of extra wind over the condenser. with cooled it more.

 

I have used this foaming cleaner that you spray up the drain tube. I did it once last year, maybe i need to try and do it again.

 

Well they didn’t work for me and I used a thermometer to check vent temp...did you? I wish they worked trust me lol

 

Maybe I should try the straight blade design instead of the s blade ?

 

the fans were on a single switch with relays ( on, off) . so when I was sitting in the truck somewhere for long period of time . I could turn them on and blow more air threw condenser to keep the air cold . turned them off with vehicle was moving cause they went not needed if the truck was moving cause air was flowing through the condenser

 

What size are they? I’m not sure that I have room to add a second one.

I’m thinking about switching to the straight blade design. I reversed the polarity and switched the fan blade to make it a pusher

 

When was the last time you changed your in cabin air filter? Clean one makes a big difference in the amount of air it blows.

 

Just ordered a new one to hopefully partially fix my AC, mine smelled like dirty ass and was filled with leaves.

 

What fan are you using? A poor choice of fan which has a drastic CFM decrease with static pressure would probably end up blocking more airflow than it pushes

 

Covered it already then. It seems reasonable that cleaning those fins would improve convection as well as improving the smell. Did they just undersize the condenser, the or what? You'd think by now these systems would be well understood and the engineering mature.

It feels like it pushes a ton of air and has good reviews.

 

Seems to be mainly an issue for the southern states, so maybe a smaller concern to Toyota. Still a little under engineered for sure.

So I realize this is about 2nd gens but my 93 Land Cruiser has a massive interior space and only front vents and I live in AZ. So I think I have similar issues as well, the cruiser does a great job of keeping its engine cool with the clutch fan and a massive radiator so I find it rarely if ever needs to ramp up the clutch fan much at stops and slow roads around town. This leads to pretty lame A/C performance though because you need constant flow across the condenser for the A/C to keep up and if that clutch fan isn't spinning much that isn't gonna do it. So I opted to tap into the A/C system pressure switch and use it to trigger a relay that turns on a condensor fan that I bought from a wrecked second gen 4runner. Works perfectly and keeps the A/C doing its thing at stops and around town. On the highway your clutch fan and any electric fans shouldn't be doing anything as they're far less efficient than the air ramming effect from moving that fast. Here's a couple pics of my fan setup, just welded some brackets together and utilized existing holes...

It's also worth nothing that my 1st gen's A/C blows ice fucking cold in 115 degree temps and can freeze me out at a stop sign if it wanted too. But it spins its clutch fan a lot more I think what with the Supercharger and having a smaller less adequate radiator for high ambient temps.

 

Hosed out my radiator and condenser/evaporator and now my a/c is ice cold

 

Evap is buried in a box, how? Did you use the foam or squirt water up the tube?

 

Whichever is out front... But yes I have one of those kits.

 

Yeah, condenser cooling fins in front is where the heat is removed from the refridgerant and the evaporator fins in the AC box is where the cooled refridgerant pulls heat from the cabin air. Having both clean should improve efficiency and keep it smelling fresh instead of like old cigarettes, laundry hamper, mould, you get the idea. Eventually they always need service to repair leaks and/or get recharged but the maintainence you just did obviously put that time off.
