Most of the regulars I hit up you'd be fine with 33s and 4x4 but decent skids and sliders are recommended. You'd definitely want a rear locker for Gold Mountain though and MJT. Next time we do Rowher, Drinkwater, Pilot Rock etc though you should come, you'll be good without one on those.

Putting a feeler out. I have a buddy looking for a vehicle. He wants to get out, explorer, camp, etc. But doesn’t plan on doing any serious wheeling.

He was asking about Wranglers but i recommended he look into a 3rd gen 4 Runner. If anyone has an insight of a decent one please let me know!

    His price is around 6K.

    Sounds great, thanks!

I like the 3rd gens. I recommended the 3.4 with a manual. That’s what I would do but what are your thoughts on an auto and how is the 3,0?

The auto is solid as long as you add an external trans cooler. The 3.0 sucks. $6k should get you a fairy nice 3rd gen though. Finding a manual I think might be tough.

I thought I had heard that the 3.0 is a no go. Thanks for confirming.

The 3.0 was notoriously underpowered for a 6cyl and had real bad head gasket issues. I would opt for the 22re if I was choosing between the two motors of that era. I think the 3rd gen 4runners were either the 2.7 or the 3.4l though IIRC. The 3.4l is an excellent motor.

22re is a beast. And $7k at LCE goes far.

High boost blower and 5th injector kit :burnrubber:

Though I can't imagine it would be all that fast even with a supercharger lol. But a high revving 4banger with one would be fun.

The 3.4l is fun boosted too don't get me wrong, but it doesn't like to rev high. I'm told I need to push it to 4k to get the most out of the supercharger but at 3k she's starting to scream like it hurts.

Built 22re will scorch 33s with a spool and 5.29 gears. Also will keep up with a mini-corsa spec car....until 3rd lol. I think mine ran to 7500 and pulled the whole way. But that was many moons ago

My buddy on the East Coast build those motors for his mud trucks. Holds them WTFO and they hold together.

Just a lot of work for a DD. A boosted 22 would be so sick though!

Problem with mine was no limiter, so on the juice one day letting most of van Nuys hear the song of my people and cylinder 3 decided it wanted a window seat to sepulveda blvd. Still ran too, sheared the connecting rod and piston floated in the cylinder, ran under it's own power to the next block when I finally realized it wasnt something stuck in the fan lol

    Whole lotta stuff
Toyota seems to got it right with there inline4 from the trucks ( I had a 22re in my 95 pickup, great engine) and the inline6 from the Supra. Both hold well with performance upgrades. Not a lot of engines take the extra abuse so well
