Here is my invoice breakdown minus taxes:

    90311-A0006 Seal - $64.29
    90080-31068 Seal - $12.05
    00289-2BC00 NON-Clor Brake - $6.06
    Labor 7.4 tech hours - $673.40

    Total: $755.80

I'm happy to report, the RMS is still leak free.

Thabks for the reply i just called toyota nearest me sadly they want 800 for parts and labor but its still way less than i though i had the 2k figure in my head and was braced for the worst. I think id rather pay 800 than pull everything out from the tranny back.

Thats way better than I thought it would be. They even charged you for the brake cleaner they used to clean up.

I know nothing about the RMS on a Tacoma, but I know my old Jeep Cherokee had an RMS leak and the seal was actually kind of easy to fix on your own. It was a circle cut in half and you tapped the old seal out and gently tapped the new one in. Hammering the old one out wasn't a big deal, not damaging the new one was the key.

Does the Tacoma really require pulling the tranny or is there a "trick" to do it with less effort?

You have to pull the transmission on any vehicle to replace the rear main seal. The rear main seal is behind the flywheel / Flexplate. I'm sure you would have to remove the transmission for the Jeep to replace the rear main seal also.

Nope. Do a Google search for "replace rear main seal Jeep 4.0" and see for yourself. You pull the oil pan and remove a bottom cover for the RMS. The RMS is 2 pieces that mate together to make a whole circle. The tough part is the upper part of the seal because you have to lube it really well and push it in carefully. The Jeep 4.0 is notorious for RMS leaks. I know because I've owned 3 of them. With new oil and parts replacing the RMS on a Jeep 4.0 can be done for under $50 in your driveway.

WOW that's it? When my mother unit's 4Runner's RMS went bad the best price, BEST PRICE, we found locally was $3,500.
She ended up selling it to one of our cousins who owns a shop and sells cars on the side. No idea what he did with it but I miss it. :(

I stand corrected, Thanks for the info.

It seems like it would be a huge pain either way. It's obvious why it leaks being a two piece seal.

That is insane, the dealer here just quoted me 850.00 with parts and labor for the 2012 tacoma
