But you also didn't factor in tax, tags and title fees. It's about another $2k here.

Ha I put almost what it costs for a conversion in my lift and other additions to my '05, value is that of the owner. I get your point of if it may start becoming unreliable but if he knows it inside and out and knows the maint. history then I say he's plenty safe. He said it was paid off which is a big plus and has already done some mods to it.

I restomodded a '72 old cutlass for a guy it was a decent car to start with no major rot he ended up spending around 45g when it was all said and done and it being a non special model it only is valued around 20-25g if that but it's what he wanted.

4x4 rigs around me were ~5k more. And besides one advantage i like is the awd part, I can safely drive around in 4hi and not worry about binding when there is snow or ice

Well for one,if say someone runs into him after the conversion,he will be out a lot of money due too the age of the truck, just something too consider.

If we are going by that logic then nobody can mod their trucks either.

or repair or maintain because an insurance will not pay for those things unless it has been done within a month usually.

No joke. I had a lady crash into me and total my car less than 5 miles after putting $1100 worth of tires on it. The insurance company gave me an extra $45 for the tires after I complained. They said they don't pay extra for good tires because it's a requirement to keep the car in good mechanical condition, including tires.

Sucks but that's the way it is. I refuse to go and buy a "more valuable" vehicle and have payments etc. and then to mod it and loose even more money if something like that were to happen and be out not only the mod money but the interest and all the other added costs to a vehicle that isn't paid off.

I just tallied my conversion prices up...$3250 and that's not including the transmission. The trans swap, transfer case install was a pain in the ass and I wouldn't recommend doing this part of it. I'm also Chaos long travel so had the extra expense of Chaos axles. That price includes all new front wheel bearings and cv boots from the dealer.

    Is do
for me it was around $2,500. Is not an easy task, I use a 4Runner transfer case and wire hardness. In my thread you will find lot of info, including links to other’s 4x4 conversion. Good luck.!!

I vote 4x4 conversion, but I'm biased:D I found all my conversion parts on car-part.com. My general rule of thumb was to find parts with fewer miles than my truck. Parts are plentiful for V6 trucks with automatic transmissions, so you should be able to find some that are still in pretty good shape. You are wise to want to keep your truck that is already paid off rather than taking the hit at the dealer. The manual FJ t case is definitely an upgrade and they go for about the same price as a used Tacoma t case. The transmission cross member is the hardest part of this whole ordeal. You either need to be a good fabricator or have a friend that is one. If you're up for the challenge, go for it:thumbsup:

I am wondering what is different regarding the 4runner to Tacoma tcases to make the AWD buttons work if I wasn't worried about having the center diff light on the dash? Unless you made that work as well. I would be converting a 4wd to a 4runner case.

To start with it’s a totally different plug. As there are 2 shift motors vs the Tacoma only has one.
You wound also want the 4Runner’s 4wd computer since the system has to lock the center before it locks the front add.

The 4Runner case is a few inches longer than the Tacoma case because of the center locker. Aka you’ll need the 4Runner front shaft and possibly have the rear shortened.

I made both the 4wd and center locker lights work by adding my led’s into the dash just under the 4wd switch

When you say the 4wd computer. I asked the wrecker for stuff and they look at me with a blank stare. Is it separate obviously from the ECU? Any chance of a location?

Yea it’s a small box, roughly size of a phone. Shound have 2 plugs on the bottom, one goes to the dash harness other goes to tcase. It’s located on the passonger side. Think it was on the wall just in front of the pass front door. Remove the lower right lock panel. Shound have the sticker saying 4wd ecu.

Also not a bad idea to get to get the 4wd switch(illuminated) and the center locker switch to the left of the steering wheel.

If they will let you you can get the transfer case plug wiring from on top of the motor. It’s in the back middle of the motor running onto the tranny

I plan on duel cases at the same time using a 4:1 black box. So the harness might just have to be ordered. But the harness from the 4wd ECU to the dash harness. I would assume it has another wire to trigger the diff lock light?
I will talk to a couple wreckers on my trip. Maybe I will get a better deal then locally here

It Shound just not sure how it ties in. It get the entire harness is a pain couse the entire dash wound have to be removed. I found it easier to trace the wires as far as possible then cut them.

If your adding a dual box then you might as well make the harness yourself. Just need the plug ends
