LSD in 2006 2wd i4 manual

I've noticed that 2010 models come with LSDs. Can I get such a thing for a base model 2006 Tacoma? I mostly highway communte, but I live in the country and have a several hundred yard hilly driveway that I cannot use the Tacoma on in inclimate weather. I also may want to have confidence on boat ramps, or when driving across muddy land, etc. Would the LSD be good for this? I don't really want a 4x4 because I need the highway mileage (I get slightly over 25 average.)

If this aftermarket part is available...will it screw with my on-road performance?

I can't help you with the swap but I also have a long rough steep driveway here in WNC so am interested in trying or hearing about how the 2010 LSD does. My 2002 auto does ok but I would be more comfortable with both rear wheels driving. I am considering a 2010 but I don't want to give up the regular cab auto.

 

Here's what I've learned from my research on the subject. There are a few aftermarket options for traction aiding devices. Your options are:

• clutch type mechanical LSD like an Eaton posi
• torsion type mechanical LSD like an Eaton/Detroit Truetrack
• automatic locker like a richmond gear powertrax no-slip or lock-right
• selectable locker like an ARB air locker

Clutch type LSD's are probably more useful for street driving. They can be finicky with gear oil (Eaton recommends dino oil) and require additional additive to the oil.

Torsion type LSD's are also probably more useful for street driving too. They do not require additive, but Eaton recommends dino oil in their truetracks.

Automatic lockers (lunchbox lockers) are probably more suited for dedicated off road rigs, but are also popular with daily drivers. They can be noisy when they engage/disengage but typically don't have specific oil requirements. Probably the cheapest to install, but not very street friendly.

The ARB is probably the most robust and most favored for it's offroad capabilities. It is air activated and requires an on-board air compressor to activate/deactivate it. It is probably the most expensive option as well. It only works when you want it to.

I'm sure plenty of people will disagree with me, but the above seems to be the general consensus, at least for a 2wd truck

 

If you have the 6 lug, yes, you can install a LSD. The 5 lugger, I do not believe has any aftermarket support for a LSD.

 

That's a good point. I forgot about that. At least Eaton's devices (at least the truetrack, so I assume the others as well) require the rear end gear ratio to be between 3.54-5.29. On a manual 5 lug taco, the above devices wouldn't fit without changing the gear ratio which can be costly.

 

Oh...bummer. I was REALLY hoping to have a limited slip option. In perusing the site to now, I haven't seen it mentioned that the 5Lug base models couldn't be upgraded with an aftermarket LSD. Does anyone know if there MIGHT be an option out there?

Would the 2010 LSD work in the 2006? Could you just swap out the whole rear end?

 

2010's have the auto LSD which is really just electronic controlled braking. Probably hard to swap in.

So there is not a practical way to install a LSD in a five lugger (first or second gen)?

 

I guess not...at least in a 2nd gen. Not sure about first gens. A powertrax is still an option but I'd research it or take a ride with someone who has one so you know if it's something you want.

 

I thought someone who re-did their gear ratio with a V6 ratio used the 3rd member from the 6-lug on the 5 lug truck. Maybe this would allow you to use a after market limited slip? Not sure....

 

What about an ARB selectable? Will this work on a 5lugger?

 

You can use a third from a 6 lug, but that means a gear ratio change, additional cost for the third member, and then adding an LSD if it doesn't already have one. I didn't think the op wanted to change gear ratios.

 

To sum it up, no you cannot put an LSD in the 5 lugger, base model tacos. You can put a LSD carrier in all of the 6 luggers, except for the TRD off road models that untilize the 8" rear end.

The five lugger axle housing will not accept the "8.4" third member, gear change or not.

Your truck has "Auto-LSD". Toyota's brake system based traction system that limits wheel speed differences similar to a Mechanical LSD.

 

I saw someone that had a truck identical to mine (a first gen 5 lugger with the 2.4) who put an aussie locker in his rear end. He said the manufacturer says it wont fit but it bolted right in.

I have a base model regular cab. I was able to put Powertrax Lockright in mine without changing the gears.
