It may have been leaking before you noticed it. Week after I found out, they finally told me once they removed the carpet, it had been leaking way before that.

Toyota Corp actually came through for me on my '16. Took it to dealer at the end of May with the leaking issue and he suggested I give Corp a call and he would work a quote out. I have already put 68K miles on it too... Corp had me give them contact info for the dealer quote and I somewhat patiently waited for a response, while meanwhile duck taping the hell out of it. Few weeks later, Corp lets me know that they will indeed cover it...$600. Then after waiting about 6 weeks total, part came in and dealer replaced it in five hours. Also, cleaned seats and head liner (beyond what I had already done).. actually was surprised it went like it did especially hearing how most dealers are handling this and other issues..

This is kind of crazy. I had the leak just a week or so ago. I took it to the dealer on a Friday and it was done Saturday.

Noticed my 2016 leaking the other day. I had just started taking it through auto car washes about 8 months ago. I've only had it through them half a dozen times. Leaking like crazy soaking the back seat. Took it to the dealer and it was quoted as a $500+ repair. That is just to replace the light assembly, not cleaning the mildew smell out like others are getting. I'm half tempted to trade it in. I had a new 2015 and had the dealer install a roof rack on the truck. It leaked like crazy whenever it would rain after only owning it for a few months. That is how I ended up with the 2016. I think I am just gonna trade it in and get a used Silverado.

I just got my 2016 Dbl Cab back from a dealer body shop after getting repaired for an accident. i am just over 36k (37.5) and they are telling me they have to reach out to Toyota to see if they will make an exception for coverage.... The water was coming in so bad it was running on the people that were riding in the backseat. Any advice from people who have had success with Toyota. I have bought several vehicles from this dealer and am feeling a little hung out to dry on this one.

just had my 17 in for 10k service. I mentioned water dripping from headliner. they said order new one with improved gasket. Still waiting almost 3 weeks for replacement. Big rains here for 3 days, truck parked, = rear 1/3 headliner soaked , seat soaked, carpet and rear WeatherTeck was wet.

    None...yet
I'm really interested to know if this has been repaired on the '18. I just got mine so this is making me really nervous. It doesn't look like anyone with an '18 has mentioned anything on the thread yet. Maybe Toyota decided to install the improved gasket from the factory? Or maybe someone has a before/after pic of the old and new gasket for reference?

Usually wash the truck by hand and detail by hand but today I was low on time so I took it to a near touchless carwash. (Cant do those that the rollers touch vehicle). Looked in my rear view mirror and saw the leak. Thought it was the power sliding glass since I had reww ad slot about those leaking l. Looked at it and it was coming from the headliner above the window so it has to be the 3rd brake light. Well damn. 2017 off road

Just got word from my dealer Toyota is not covering and neither is the dealer!!! $6-8k for the full repair due to the amount of damage. I have 37k miles on the truck. I started a thread on twitter. Been a Toyota customer 20+ years with and when I actually need their help nothing.

I believe the issue was improperly tightened screws holding the assembly in which distorted the gasket.

Noticed my leak from third brake light two weeks ago when we had a full week of rain in Louisiana. Well, actually, I didn’t know at the time it was from the third brake light, but saw my backseat was damp for some odd reason. I had a towel laid out at the time, and it was also damp. I knew I didn’t spill anything but thought maybe I did and forgot, or maybe it was just some wet groceries. The week after we didn’t have any rain so I washed my truck that following weekend and noticed the seat was wet again. So I figured it was the back glass and/or power sliding glass which I only use occasionally.

So I called Toyota dealership where I bought the truck, to see if they were having issues and complaints and they said other people were calling about issues also and it is with the third brake light leaking water. And I’m wondering how long was this issue going on and why weren’t people warned of the potential. I can understand minor things happening inside or out but this can turn into something major.

So I told them to get me a loaner or a rental because I’m not driving it anymore if rain is predicted. Not until it is fixed. I drive a 2017 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab TRD Sport 2WD. Just over 24,000 miles. It’s been a good truck other than bringing it in for the transmission issue, which they did an update, and a rattle from the exhaust, I heard which they fixed.

They say the part or fix may not be in until September. National backorder. Which is likely a gasket. But hopefully before. Which is pretty disappointing. I almost feel like trading in my truck for another brand. I had just started addding accessories to it. I also feel like writing the Toyota chief engineer a letter. A nice one. But telling him how the quality is suffering some. My 2003 and 2010 didn’t nearly have these issues.

So how are people preventing this?

Could I just add a thin bead of sealant to the outside or would it need to be taken apart and sealed from the indside?

    Thank

Not sure what others are doing.

I had asked the dealer what I or they could do for a temporary fix so I could still drive it. But really they couldn’t tell me. They preferred to just tape it I guess and keep it under cover out of rain, until they do fix it.

Besides, I didn’t want any damage to be done. I will ask though if they noticed any damage to seat itself like fabric, etc or other interior issues. I probably caught it early.

My guess is they’ll be taking it apart and changing the gasket and maybe anything else and would need to be.

If I were you I’d call then and ask them. But they may want to keep it and fix it the right way.

That way you don’t encounter problems later.

I can understand you’d want to prevent it but if it’s under warranty. It’s their problem to fix and fix it right.

Called my dealership this morning and they said they can order the part.

They have to inspect it first before they replace it and they said it's about a 2-3 hour job.

I haven't noticed any water in my cab however there is an odd odor in my vehicle which I'm thinking might be due to water.

Hoping they don't just spray it with a hose and see no leaks and refuse to repair it.
