Amp advice?

i have a set of Polk Audio component speakers in the front doors with no amp yet, and a JL steathbox with two 10in subs hooked up to a Sony amp.. when i buy my amp for the door speakers, can i hook up the amp to the rear door factory speakers or should i up-grade them as well before i hook an amp up to them?? I'm afraid the noise will be over bearing in the front if the amp is only hooked up to my front polk speakers?!?

 

I think you would be fine w/out rear door speakers. However, if you want rear door speakers then you should upgrade. If the rear door are anything close to the crap that was in the front then putting an amp on them would not be a good thing.

 

If you were to amp the factory speakers you would blow them. So no, dont amp them unless you put some new ones in there first

many factory speakers run at a much lower wattage than aftermarket. if you do amp them I would expect them to blow.... some factory stuff runs on different ohms as well

 

What is it you are trying to accomplish?

Many people who compete dont even use rear speakers, as they want their "sound stage" up front, with them.

Its a preference thing. I like having rear speakers, but adjust the fader on the deck or EQ so I can BARELY notice their presence. Again, thats my preference. If I'm at the drive-in or have passengers in the rear, I can always send the rears more power with the touch of the fader.


You can successfully amp stock speakers, but how long they last and what they sound like depends.

What volume do you play your music?

What size amp, and how you set the gains.

Does the amp have a built in X-over? If so, what kind? If the rear speakers are crossed-over to only receive everything above say 100hz, they will then be able to handle more power (within reason).

Most factory decks put out anywhere from 8-15 watts RMS (ballpark guess). PROPERLY installing and tuning a 25 watt amp probably wont kill them, but again it just depends on how you set it up.

Is it worth it? Not in my opinion, No way. But hey, whats the worst you can do? Blow a set of stock speakers you were replacing anyway. If your into tinkering and experimenting...go for it!!!!


My suggestion... I would leave the factory speakers alone (powered of the deck). Use the fader to adjust front to rear (as thats what its for).

Later, if you decide to upgrade the factory rear speakers, then worry about amplification. But dont think you have to go high wattage or even high dollar on the rear-fill.

Most systems I've heard sound better when the front or main stage is doing its job, with just a hint of rear complimenting them. Speakers screaming from every door sounds like crap, atleast IMO.
