What happens if there is an update avail and they flash it with the ovtune on the truck.

Is Matt's tune his own intellectual property? or is it Toyota's?

I wonder if Toyota can take Matt's tunes, and then resell them as TRD ECU flashes?

It would just overwrite the OV tune and install the Toyota updated tune. The tech wouldn't have a clue that you have a tune installed.

While we wait for the 1.05 to drop does anyone ever ask themselves why we can't get the perfect tune? What I'm looking for is a smooth even power delivery from idle to red line. I don't want to hear any pinging or surging at certain rpms. I want to be able to shift my truck smoothly without any of the jerky, jerky going on. Since I bought the tune at the beginning of the year there has been 102, 103a, 103b, 103c and 104. Forgive me if I forgot any, there has been so many. Can't Matt just spend the time with the truck on a dyno and dial in a tune that address all of the short comings of the stock tune? Then actually drive with the tune for some miles before releasing it to make sure it's good. I just want this truck to drive like my 2015 Camry or my mother's 2018 Sienna. Both of them deliver smooth consistant power with good throttle response. Don't get me wrong, I do like the 104 better than the stock tune but just get the one tune that will make the truck feel "normal". This sh@t is just getting old.

Sorry for the Sunday morning rant.

I'm with you on this, and I believe the biggest obstacle right now is the lack of a M/T dev truck. Mat has said there are things he just cannot replicate with an A/T, such as what happens when you hold the engine at high load at a low(ish) RPM. And no, remote tuning and getting feedback/logs just won't cut it on this engine for the level of refinement you speak of.
If you look at mostly all of the big improvements made to date, it's all been done on the A/T first (excepting maybe that throttle thing us M/T guys helped with). Not to mention the slushbox likely masks some of the very things we complain about.

Another problem of course, is the fact that some of these trucks don't react the same to a particular file, and one person's definition of perfect is definitely not the same for other ppl. Take the tip-in shitshow for example.

I think the biggest challenge he runs into is variability so even when that “perfect tune” is released there is so much component variability in the SAME trucks there’d likely still be work to do.

This is how I look at it. Had he waited for 1.04 quality for example, he wouldn’t have been able to afford to develop against it for the last year. Early adopters funded the time to develop and hone in to get us to 1.04. Plus what one person sees as perfection will still drive complaints or change requests for others...

I think we are on the same page lol. But what Mr. Buggy speaks of are real annoyances that pretty much everyone who experiences them will not be happy with.
I guess personally I've kinda lost sight a bit of why I went for this tune in the first place.. driveability. The fattening up of the power band has seduced me, love how that feels. There are things that still need work.
As stated, Mat will need to drive a tuned M/T to really make it shine.

I'm just starting to lose confidence in that Matt will ever get a tune that will not have all the annoying characteristics that we have come to accept. You would think with more investment into the project with time and money that the "perfect" tune could be achieved. The 104 in my opinion is about 80% from perfect and perfect being 95%. Give me a tune that doesn't buck on slight acceleration in 1st and 2nd. A tune that doesn't ping at low rpm. I experienced that while pulling my TT. I use to have a 2002 Ford Ranger with the 3.0 V6 manual and its drivability was actually better than the Tacoma.

On a side note. Has anyone noticed that their truck runs close to perfect when it's raining outside.

I want to buy this tune, but I keep reading about this "ping". By "ping" do you mean that this tune causes the engine to Knock?

Ignition knock or ping, yes. Some report it also happens on the stock calibration, so saying the tune causes it may not be a 100% accurate statement. My truck does it around 3k rpm when you first get into it, then it goes away (1-2 seconds). It doesn’t happen all the time either.

I think the big thing is the complexity of these ECUs. With each revision there is typically something else that Matt found buried in there that can be tweaked. On the flip side, sometimes one thing effects another and it may not always be immediately noticeable. I’m sure it’ll get there but it’ll take some time. There’s also the variability between trucks which causes a lot of headaches. When two identical trucks perform differently, that’s in no way an easy problem to figure out a solution

I’ve got a lot of miles on 1.04 and I’m content but I’m also glad development is continuous and this isn’t the end. Since I tuned, the truck has changed in ways I never even imagined. It’s amazing what can be done with software

The tune is still in beta, no?

The tune is constantly in development. I’m not sure id still call it beta at this point but there’s definitely still more to come.

I'd say once custom tunes come out it'd be considered full release since most people would want a custom tune from there on

Yeah. I got the notion it was still under development. But early adopters are complaining that it’s not good enough when it’s not complete yet.

Although on the other side of the argument, development on this platform is taking a really long time.

Honestly in development time, it’s not that long. Also keep in mind that nearly everything has had to be developed from scratch.

I see. Well I won't buy the tune until this remedied then.

From what i can read it apparently knocks even on the 91 octane tune. That sounds a little dangerous to me.

I understand the need for development but I think a tune should be close to complete before being released. Any further releases should be just a tweak. In the last six months there has been 6 new tunes and some have been very different from the previous. As a consumer you just start to lose confidence in the product and get the impression " well that one didn't work so well so let's try this one".
