Doubts about my Taco

I dunno, I never really seriously looked at the Tundra because of its mileage (weight and price too), but now that I've had my 2010 Taco for a few weeks I've been so disappointed with its mileage that I've been thinking I should have gotten a 5.7L Diesel Tundra monster. "May as well, ya know".

A friend of mine just picked one up, and it looks nice and sounds great even with the stock intake and exhausts. (It's a used 08 I believe).

Talk me out of the Tundra, or I might do something really financially stupid ..

ETA: My bad, no diesel. I assumed the 5.7L was diesel

 

I like the tundra but dont do anything financially stupid. If your looking for a light good mileage truck buy a first gen double cab. My 3.6 v6 is getting 18 city and 21 highway and it will go anywhere.

 

Do you like driving like you have all the gas in the world? Do you need the extra size? Are you going to like parking a "boat"? Do you like the sound of a V6 with exhaust better than a V8 with/without exhaust (I do)?

And there is no diesel...

Mmm.. no Diesel. Brainfart. goes to show I don't know anything about the Tundras yet.
Do I need it? No. Before I got my (new) 2010 Tacoma I was driving a Pacifica 3.6L V6 Pacifica (which I loved, until it fell apart). I got bitten by the truck bug now. I'll never go back.

Diesel Tundra? Hmmm.... I don't see that as an option on Toyotas website.

If you're worried about mileage on the tacoma, you're definately gonna be worried about mileage getting a bigger truck. Why would you go bigger?

 

well if you get the tundra, you wont have a tacoma...
i was going to get a tundra BUT thought it was to much truck for my needs PLUS i think there UGLY
PLUS a tacoma holds its value better then a tundra.

 

My 07 Tundra 5.7 got better gas mileage than this 4.0. Hopefully that was not your only reason for buying the Tacoma.

 

There's no way you'll get better MPG in a Tundra than what I'm getting. 17-18city/22-23hwy. Just isn't going to happen.

 

I'm not saying the Tundra will get better MPGs than the Tacoma. What I'm saying is that I get 16MPGs with my Tacoma, so even if the Tundra gets less, it won't be much.
(and I'm haven't even replaced the tires and lifted it yet, so it's only going to get worse)

I also have a friend that has a Chevy 2500HD Duramax Cummings and he says he gets 22MPGs on the hwy when towing his (large) boat. WTF ..
Like I said, disappointed. I thought the Taco would at least stay in the 20s.

 

Diesels do get good hwy mileage, that's a fact.

The Tacoma does stay around 20 combined mileage for most folks.

Of course, this is why we research before we make major purchases. This site could've very easily given you an idea prior to your purchase.

The only thing I can tell you know is, go see what kind of deal you can make on a Tundra. Paying for something you don't like sucks so, IMO, it would be better to take a bit of a loss to get something you really like.

 

Is your truck even broken in yet? Maybe that's why you're only getting 16 mpg. I routinely get 18-19 mixed driving in mine. No way you'll get that in a Tundra; my buddy is lucky to get 16 highway in his Tundra.

 

Duramax is Chevy....Cummins is Dodge... not Duramax Cummins...

 

It's a truck so I didn't buy it for the gas mileage. If I needed to haul more heavy stuff, I would have got a Tundra. I think they are great trucks. However, I usually drive my Tacoma to work and don't haul too much stuff so I didn't want to be driving around a large rig like the Tundra.

Doesn't make sense to me to buy a larger, more expensive, worse on gas truck like a Tundra when I don't need the extra size and power. Tundra's a great trucks though.

I was getting around 14mpg/17mpg when I first got my Tacoma. Now I get 17mpg/20mpg.

Mileage is essentially a function of displacement. The bigger the combustion chambers get, the more gas you gon' suck down.

The reason the Tacos get "poor" (it's not bad at all actually) mileage is because they have a bigass six cylinder under the hood. Most 6cyl engines range from 2.x to 3.x liters. Most V8s range from 3.x (high 3s) to 5.x liters.

The reason we get V8 mileage is because we have V8 displacement (and power equal to V8s on the market ten years ago). Toyota pretty much just decided to go with 6 big cylinders instead of 8 smaller ones.

I drove twice to Columbia this weekend. That's 1hr straight 70MPH, and it never got above 18.2 AVG in my SGII. Sure, when I coast in town it will jump up to 32, or when I drive 45MPH it indicates 28MPG, but what good does that do when I do the math at the pump and average out 16-17MPG.

I have 2200 miles on my truck, or something like that. My other vehicle mileage always dropped as more miles appeared on the ODO. Why would tha Tacoma be different?

 

I'm getting just under 21 mpg with my 2010 V6 4x4 access cab mixed city and hwy.
It's been said to death, but if you really want better mileage, you need to lighten up on the gas pedal. I don't baby mine exactly, but I don't race away from stoplights just to be the first one sitting waiting at the next one either.
Also, the first tank was the worst, at 19.5 mpg, but it improved as the engine is getting broken in and loosening up a bit.

 

seriously not to thread jack, but how many miles in a typical "breaking" in period...my 2010 dcab 4x4 has almost 3k miles on it, almost everything is stock except the exhaust and 265/75/16 tires and i'm averaging horrible MPG...with mix city/highway i have yet to get higher then the 260-280 mark on a full tank of gas...i too was considering the tundra this past time around if i could have afforded it, i was looking into some used ones before i bought my 2010 taco...lasttime i had the 6spd taco and i thought i'd get better mpg from the auto...i'm running mobil1 synthetic and i'm not a fast heavy footed driver by any means....
