TSB 0273-17 Leaf Spring silencer noise

I haven't been the only one. I gave GM 3 chances to fix the squeak. There are several TSBs for it through GM. They greased them the first three times. Grease, for a squeak like this is a temporary, at best, fix. I only had to give them two chances before I sent them a final repair notice. Their final repair was to replace the springs with new ones. They were squeaking when I got home from the dealership.

I had the Silverado replaced, MSRP for MSRP, finally, after it had 32,000 miles. My wife got a pretty nice Traverse with it. I got a Tacoma.

IMO, trucks these days are just as much "luxury" vehicles as any other. They aren't just the work horses they used to be. I didn't pay the cash that I did for a truck that squeaked so bad the radio couldn't drown it out. I just used the GA lemon law. Followed the requirements... and after headaches, I got my Silverado replaced.

I guess it's arguable... but a TSB is created to fix something. You don't need to fix something that's working as expected. In GA at least, a manufacturer has three chances to fix an issue. If they can't fix it, and the issue was first brought to the manufacturer withing 24,000 miles, you can use the lemon law. Oddly, a local lawyer said I didn't have a lemon case, so I did it myself, and got completed it without any real issues. It just took 8 months.

 

i asked the dealer about this issue... Played it out as bullshit. Just had first Paided service 30 k.

They didnt do shit...Real sweet of them.

 

The power train warranty it 6/60, this would apply.

 

In GA, at least, the dealerships aren't involved with lemons. My GM dealership, who I like, had never processed a lemon. Going straight to Toyota will still get you resistance until you use the channel appropriate for your state.

 

I will second this observation. My springs started squeaking after I went off-road and squeaked for a couple weeks until I went back off-road again and now they have gone back to being silent.

 

For my Silverado it was debris between the leaves. The TSBs were to relieve them, clean them and then grease them. The problem with most greases is that they attract and hold debris. They tried several different greases, but none of them worked for mine. Maybe these springs do a little better job of flushing debris and not getting loaded up again unless they're really dirty. My brand new, grease springs started squeaking again within 25 miles of getting the put on.

 

Those who greased and have it work ... pics / sketches of where all you greased? I put a tube of silicone grease in between the leafs as best as I could ... and it sounds the same.

 

Are these VDS (S), part of the VIN #?

 

Also, when I do the recall VIN enter on Toyotas website, it says no current recalls or service campaigns for my Tacoma.
Do they only have TSBs as a fix for complaints?
I have the CZ5AN as part of my VIN which is part of the leaf spring TSB.

There are round pads at the front and rear end of each leaf. Jack the frame to let the wheel droop, pull the wheel, separate the leaf ends one at a time with a pry bar or screw driver (requires very little effort / force), wipe the surfaces if you feel like, and spray on some dry lube.

Using DuPont Teflon spray lube, it lasted a few months and two automatic car washes. IMHO, I believe high pressure sprays with car wash soaps causes this. Mine is starting to squeak again.

 

Try some type of dry lube. The silicone sprays that I have used in the past don't create a film and are very thin. DuPont Teflon dry film or maybe chain wax (I haven't tried that) will last longer.

 

I had also seen an idea to take a piece of rubber like fabric and slide it between the leaves after cleaning them out. I think that would have worked out ok.

 

Had mine fixed using this TSB earlier this year. Glad my new truck doesn't sound like it's from 1973 now.

My dealer just called after addressing this issue. They said they are greasing the springs. I am skeptical about this. I just read this TSB, it specifically says NOT to grease the leaf springs when replacing the spacers.

I suspect the noise will return with the added grease attracts a bunch of dirt that sticks around. I should probably push for the TSB when I go to pick it up.

 

Greasing the springs is useless, and it's a waste of your time. Push for the spacer install, as advised in the TSB. I went through the "greasing approach", and I was back at the dealer in a month.

 

Yeah, thanks...that is exactly what I expect to happen as well. I intend to shove the TSB in their face when I pick it up and ask them to order the parts for the proper repair, more grease for them to remove later. Why is that I know more about this truck than the service advisors?

I'd rather go to the dentist than go the Toyota dealer for service, at least the dentist does what I ask him to, and it's less painful.

 

Agreed. All of the grease TSBs are bs.

 

Are you aware of a TSB that says to just grease the springs/pads? All I have is this TSB to replace the pads, which I intend to show to the dealer, but if there is another that says to grease them I'd like to know of it.
