We'll, I'm not an expert on the frequencies, but I do know that technically any channel we use with the beofang's without a license is prohibited. But again, we've used 151.xxx and never had a problem. It's up to you though whatever one you want to pick. I don't have a license but just wanted to give you a frequency that we've used on runs in the past.

I just checked a list of repeater channels for Mono county, I think if we use 395.000 or 420.000 we should be clear of interfering with anyone, and both those channels are very easy to remember. There are a bunch of channels close to 151. and 154. and they seem to be emergency, fire, sheriff, or military so might be best to steer clear of those guys lol

Donny you're out of your element .

    Use bfg pits 153.395 and/or 151.625 (weatherman)

If there is traffic on a channel, we can always swap up on the fly.

    This.

For the trip, I picked up one of these range extender's for my radio a couple of weeks ago. I hope they add a little distance because I've never been that impressed with the range I get with the stock antenna.

I have one of those and based on my experience it should provide you with decent improvement in range.

    I have a few questuons:
1.can we use this older cheaper version of the baofeng, or is it worth the extra $30 to get the newer one?
    2. Do we really NEED the liscense? I think we'll be out of the way enough to not interfere with other HAM radios, the range on them isn't THAT good is it?

You are not even going my to be transmitting in the HAM frequencies anyways. Don’t even worry about it.

Ok thanks, just got confused when they started talking about needing a liscense to use a damn walkie talkie

You'll be fine with that radio you have. As long as it will pick up the frequency we're on and transmit, that's all you need.
I don't have a license and highly doubt I'll ever get around to getting one. Maybe one day when I'm older and have more time on my hands, but that won't be anytime soon. Correct, the range on them is very low in my experience, that's why I am not concerned about a license, honestly.

Yes the cheaper one will work fine. The more expensive one will get better reception.

Best way to avoid FCC since it seems like most people don't have their license.

When we ran Santiago peak with randy... we used 151.420 and it turned out it was a sheriffs band. Got to hear the radio communication at times. We used it all day and no sheriff or the FCC came looking for us.

I've been a licensed ham for years and will agree with this. In the middle of nowhere and not on any repeater, just use a frequency. It aint gonna hurt anything or anybody. Really everyone should get their license, its easy, then you can use repeaters and other cool stuff.

I just ordered the newer one for the better reception. Better than wasting my money on the cheap one and not being able to use it when I need it.
