So what's the story with Port Wine? I've read three different ones. Not sure what is real, or are they all just a story?

Doesn't list anything for the town's name. I did find this though.

I think what @HAVING FUN is saying is I'm no longer a little bitch in the passenger seat. I'm a big bitch in the driver seat. So you all have to like me. It's in the rules.

@tacomgee I'll still ride in your passenger seat though. So smooth.

Is that the one? I hugged the wrong side I guess. My slider kept my door off the boulder to the left luckily.

Funny part was I didn't ever touch my skids. Not a bit.

First time I went to the outside of the middle rock. No issue. The second time I went the way you just did. Except my passenger rear tire was on top of the middle boulder. Slide off of it, to the left, and smashed my quarter panel. 90% of the dent went away when I added the high clearance rear bumper.

I remember seeing the posts about it. It was tight on the left. Like my slider barely kept my door safe tight.

EDIT: after looking at the pic, I should have scooted over about 8 inches. Would have been a lot safer

Thank you! I'd really like to know. There's so much California history in that area. It's horrible to think there isn't enough people interested to be able to carry on the real truth of our areas.

I was just doing a little Google search and discovered something that said several miners found a keg of port wine in the bushes and gave the district its name based on that. It also implies that this was never a town rather a gold district much like La Porte was. Looking on a map, you can see La Porte marked clearly but no mention of Port Wine (at least on Google Maps). Downieville would have been the nearest town and the county seat for Sierra County.

    Fascinating history for sure.

Spent the last 8 days exploring volcanos, lava beds, alpine lakes and waterfalls with my wonderful geology nerd of a wife. Lassen is a magical place. My hips are singing from all the hiking, don't know how people my age do the PCT...
    Some of my decent pictures.

It is too bad. There's so much rich history and cool fun facts in that area that have much to do with the history of California. I have a pretty cool book called "Up and Down California" that documents the travels of William Brewer from 1860-64. When I read about some areas, it's amazing to see how little they've changed (metaphorically speaking). Very cool stuff.

The history is one reason I love to travel in the back country.
