You talking about the dust shields that are behind the rotors? Sometimes they're called backing plates too but I've known them as dust shields.

Those spring clips just puts tension on the pads so they don't bounce around & cause noises. Without the spring clips the pads can't fall out, the pins keep them in the caliper.

Some of the cheaper aftermarket spring clips suck & pop off very easy. I'm using a set by Centric & noticed it when I put them on. Have to bend the curved end so it grips tighter on the caliper pin.

I’ll take my chances. It’s one of those laws that cops don’t really “enforce” per say unless they’re looking for something to ticket you for.

For example, the exposed fog lights I have on my bumper are technically against the law. They must be covered at all times according to California law.

That’s why KC says explicitly on the box “for off-road use only”.

Everything is illegal in Cali! That's what makes it more fun. ;)

I had someone at my autotech school who drove an 80’s E30 and was running literally straight out of the headers. He cut the exhaust pipe just under the engine.

I asked him how the hell he passed emissions.

He didn’t. He just found a shady SMOG shop in Oakland and paid the tech off. Same thing goes for my friend with a Hummer H1.

I wonder if I can install a tow hitch and call it a bumper. The CA law says it has to be installed by the manufacturer for the purposes of absorbing impact, but maybe I can use it as leverage if I do get pulled over for it.

On your VIN sticker above your gear ratio code. It’ll be next to “C/TR”

I have 204, which is Metallic Black.

@what road This website is an excellent resource for anything you need to know about these trucks. It has the paint code history, all the corporate brochures, etc.

    http://importarchive.com/toyota/tacoma/1995-2004

A neat feature is that it shows pictures of trucks with the aforementioned paint code. Here’s a super rare OEM Tacoma color called Copper Canyon Mica (3M1) discontinued after one year. You can only find it on 1998’s.

In the mid to late 90s & early 00s I was into Hondas & stuff, when it all started. Worked at a performance shop doing installs, motor swaps, & engine builds. It was easy to get away with stuff back then. Smogs, no problem, not going to say anything more about that but even today, still possible. ;)

Eventually cops started getting smarter/more informed. If they saw anything that didn't look stock under the hood, you'd get a ref ticket (state referee). Can't get way from those. I got 2 of those, first one I actually got away with, again no comment on that, but the second time I was fucked.

It all started getting way out of hand so I got out of it & sold everything. Was tired of being a steert racer anyway & I was getting older. That's when I bought the Tacoma, to drive something that I couldn't dump money into & stay out of trouble. That is until I found Custom Tacos & it was over but at least I stay out of trouble.

Anyways, now a days, here in LA, cops don't even bother much anymore checking under the hood. If you have an exhaust & look the "type" they automatically give you a ref ticket. I have friends who are still into the import stuff, had to sell their cars to get out of ref tickets, well change onwership & blah blah blah.

When I did my brakes a few months back, the new pads came with new clips and they were called 'anti-rattle clips' on the parts sheet. I don't think those are solely responsible for holding the brake pads in the caliper, just to keep the pads from rattling around.

    Nice find!

Damn I want a copy of the brochure for my truck but $5!

I miss the days of brochures, had no idea they stop carrying them at the dealers. A few months ago I walked into Toyota asking for a 4Runner brochure, told me everything is online now but I can request them online.

So that's what I did, filled out the request to mail me 4Runner & Tacoma brochures. Your post just reminded me that I never received them.

Brochures are cool! I wish I had one for my truck. Thinking I might order one from them. My friend gave me a 2013 brochure someone was about to throw away.
