My '08 Impreza and '10 Frontier have no rust. I've done nothing to them except a wash once or twice a month if that.

The Toyota trucks I've owned don't hold up well in the same environment. They are a pain to work on when every fastener on the frame rusts solid. If I get another one it will be thouroughly fluid filmed once or twice a year.

Did you look at the rust in the OP pictures (post #1)? That's a 3rd gen and plenty of rust...

Yep, the more and more time goes on the more and more I think these trucks will have frame issues as well. You’d think at the very least toyota would of required a little better frame coating from the manufacturer. Looked like nothing’s changed to me except they sprayed some type of like lithium grease/fluid film inside the frame channel at the front part of the frame.

Surface rust now, rot and holes in another 5 to 6 years. This was just to show that they didnt do any better on the 3rd gen frames then the 2nd gen frames.Allso I live in New York where they heavily salt the roads during the winter and this is what mine looks like after 2 mild winters here. I bet in the south etc the frames probably still look great after 10 years.

Krown it. $150 or so to have it done at a shop once per year or buy some and get a wand and do it yourself....well worth the money and/or time.

If you oil sprayed your truck once a year before winter, it would not look like this and be worth thousands more in 3 to 4 years when you get rid of it. No brainer to me

I lived in buffalo most my life, it didn't matter what brand vehicle I was driving, it would look like this in a year or two.

Fluid film is the shit, I apply it once a year. I highly suggest it.

How many cans of fluid film are needed to coat the underside? Never done something like this.....but it looks pretty self explanatory

about 4-6 to get a good thorough coat

get one of those pistol grip sprayer attachments while youre at it.....the cans get slippery while youre spraying and itll save your fingers

Yes, it is very much DIY.
Clean your underside the best you can, either pressure wash or garden hose will be fine. I like to let mine sit and become thoroughly dry at least 24 hours. Then, if there are any rust spots, sand them, rust reformer those spots, then paint if you so desire.
Fluid film usually takes about 4-6 cans or buy the kit off Amazon with the sprayer and wand. If you have ramps or access to a lift, it will make it easier. I take rags or paper towels and wrap the exhaust system, otherwise the residue will stink and slightly smoke the first few times you drive after applying. Then just spray everything really well, especially spraying inside the frame in every hole and crevice you can find. I would suggest spraying the rocker panels as well (remove the plugs, spray, reinsert plugs). It won’t hurt rubber seals or paint so just coat everything really well. I suggest doing this in the grass, otherwise a large sheet on your driveway, as some drip residue can make things slick.
Oh, and wear some junky crappy clothes you can throw away, the aerosol will get everywhere.

    Hope this helps!

I don't use Fluid Film - good product but too expensive. Napa sells a dripless oil spray in 20 litre or 5 gallon pails in either gold or black colored for around $85 Cdn. I use a compressor and a blower attachment with a nipple at the end with a hose going into a smaller container. One pail of this does 15 to 20 vehicles and Fluid film is around $10 per can and you would probably need at least 6 cans plus the dripless undercoat hangs on better. If you have a very rusty underside, I would cut the oil spay with hydraulic oil ( not harmful to rubber) to give it more creep value or if it is new - put it on straight.

    Oh no!
My 16 was completely rust free before I moved it up north, but it was only one winter and it still has rust. I’m gonna make a mad dash back to NC now!
