Wow they even include how much it is to ship an item! That's convenient! Maybe pelfrey could learn a thing or 2.

Well I'm not disappointed but I would have rather grabbed their bumper. Next time. Good news is I only paid 400 for mine and shipping was FREE!

So how come everyone makes everything out of cold roll steel (the bumpers, the skids, the sliders, etc.)Are they not aware of different metals or is it just easier for them.

I see it being cost effective but I would rather have a 1/8 inch plate that doesn't bend, or rust for that matter as apposed to having a 3/4 plate that bends and rusts.

You are comparing what it cost you in free material and using someone else's equipment to make something vs. what it actually costs a business to make something. There is a lot more to the cost then just material. Here just to name a few of the things the price has to cover:

    -Building Lease
    -Equipment Lease
    -Labor
    -Employment Taxes/Unemployment Insurance
    -Liability Insurance (holy crap!)
-Consumables (weld wire, gas, acetone, rags, etc)
    -Electric
    -Other energy costs (heating oil)
-Packaging (cardboard, tape, foam, bubble wrap, labels)
-Toilet paper for the bathroom (surprising how much this adds up to each month...fabricators shit alot)
-Sharpies/Grease Pens (these things get expensive after awhile)
    -Equipment maintenance
-Shipping to receive raw materials/supplies (steel, outsourced parts, hardware, gasket/edge trim, shipping supplies)....yes, we get charged shipping too!

There's a lot that goes into running a fab shop. Material cost is the easy part. Building one is trivial. Building them en masse is expensive and difficult. There's all these things and many many more. We haven't even started talking about the time/cost of customer service or the development costs associated with designing/prototyping/testing a new product. Trust me, none of us are getting rich.

We can ship you a full set of skids for ~$90. Hard to get it cheaper than that. It's a lot of steel.

We make bumpers on the East Coast. I'll have to double check but we can ship one to Massachusetts for about ~$140.

Agreed your right I did miss some stuff...I'm just trying to make sense of it all. Thanks for putting it into more prospective. I also forget that these are small companies.

It gets the job done at reasonable cost and it's readily available. There are other S/S that are readily available (304, 440, 13-8, 15-5, 17-4), but 410 doesn't seem to be that easy to get. But really the only benefit is the corrosion resistance. Since most people don't like the look of raw steel, they paint the products anyway. So why pay significantly more for the benefit?

Are you comparing the bend stiffness of 1/8" S/S to 3/4 cold rolled? For the same material thickness S/S and carbon steel have the same bend stiffness. The 3/4" plate will be many times stronger in bending than 1/8" S/S. It will rust though.

I wasn't trying to offend anyone when with what I was talking about. I just don't think that shipping something like this should cost so much. Maybe if your just shipping that 1 product and nothing else on the truck...but that's never the case.

No but I shouldn't be comparing these metals to aircraft metals anyway. I get cold roll it's easier and cheaper. But look into AMS 5596 or AMS 5599 it's way stonger more rigid and resists rusting. Just my opinion.

No but I see a huge benefit in using AMS 5596 OR 5599 compared to cold rool

Well we definitely agree there. I think shipping costs too much, but I don't have control over what the freight companies charge...unfortunately. I'm sure there are a lot of hidden costs associated with running a freight business as well.

Yea. I don't know. We hate dealing with shipping companies in general. They are a pain in the ass.

They are a pain in the ass sometimes our company uses hired trucks to ship because they beat shipping company. Youd think they would charge more!
