TRD off road have Open diff or LSD

Can you all please clarify something for me. I heard the TRD Off road package has an open differential with the locker and the Sport has the LSD. I thought all tacoma's had the LSD and the OFF ROAD package just adds the locker.

 

TRD offroad has a Locker

 

The TRD Offroad package has the locker. But it is a fully OPEN DIFF until you engage the locker.

The locker can only be engaged in 4lo range (from factory). When it's not engaged, it's an OPEN diff.

The Sport has an LSD that is functional at all times and doesn't need to be engaged.

 

if I understand correctly prior to 08, tacos came with a real LSD, not the auto braking type the 09 has?

Some of them came with the auto lsd & VSC. It was an option.

 

Here is something strange. I have a base model 4dr 4x4 and I have the LSD. I didn't not order it just saw it on the lot. Is this odd?

 

Nope, you could get the LSD as an option on non-TRD trucks.

 

I new what I had just never saw it as an option. Thanks. I was under the impression that base model trucks only came with the open diff. Thought I just got lucky.

I'd call that.... a good (and sneaky) salesman.

 

My salesman was anything but good. They normally know less about the vehicles than I do. However I overlooked this and my heavy duty towing package. He understood towing package. So I don't have my heavy duty version. but hey that was my fault.

 

is the auto LSD 4wheel or just on the rear axle?

 

Just the rear. Front is open.

These are not the same systems from years ago. I just can't keep up. lol
