Yeah. Well with manual hubs you get .01 better mpg's. Ha.

But with manual hubs you can basically drive home with a busted CV. And it's not completely necessary to carry trail spares. Unlike ADD hubs. Where you're not going anywhere without a replacement CV.
If you have one tire in the air with a trutrac, the tire in the air gets 100% traction. In that scenario you can use the e-brake to get the trutrac fooled into giving traction to the tire on the ground.

You can convert ADD spindles to manual hub spindles. That's how my 04 has them.

I have ADD and busted a CV once and was able to drive in 2wd just fine for a few miles until I got to where I could pull off and replace it with a spare I had. Of course in 4wd it was clunking like mad while busted but when I disengaged 4hi and went into 2wd, it went away and was seemingly normal. It had busted in the inner tulip.

But yeah I would hate to have manual hubs and risk breaking the hub assembly too, especially somewhere remote.

You'd have to have the manual hub part though, which is the tough part to get a hold of.

Are talking about the hub dial? You can buy them for $140 all day long.

No, the actual hub that's pressed into the spindle is what gets messed up, I believe it's like 170$ from the dealer for a brand new one, then you've gotta buy new bearings and have it all pressed together. Probably a 500$ deal using all new parts. Junkyard ones are tough to come by.

Yep, you're correct. It can be expensive when you bust a manual hub CV. But all the new parts are (for now) easy to find.
Used to be cheaper when you could buy the bronze bushings separately. That's the most likely part to damaged on the hub assembly.

I drove 500 miles home on a busted birf stub and only needed to replace the hub dial assembly and birfield. $200.

That doesn't explain how the E-brake (which operates the rear) affects the front TruTrac?

I remember a guy back in the day dragging his foot brake, but not the e-brake.

running manual hubs, with arb front locker on 37s, and supercharged with a 5 speed and duals. have no issues with the shafts breaking (except for jumping in the sand dunes last summer) i was having issues with the outer cages exploding at full turn and throttle until i welded on bigger steering stops to limit how open the cage can be, since then i have not broke anything. all about learning why there is a weak point, and upgrading it

That's the best explanation you're going to get from me. If you're that interested in the specifics you can always Google it.

I have, granted that recently, but the last I remember reading is that for a front trutrac, you drag the brake pedal, not the e-brake because that only works on the rear.

I get 2-3 MPG improvement with the hubs unlocked.

As for the original topic: you can easily break a CV with and open diff if you are spinning a tire and then it suddenly gains traction. Having a locker will make it easier to gain traction and break a CV in that scenario, but if you have a locker you should be avoiding wheel spin anyways.

I guess you meant to say 'not that recently'?

I've only used the e-brake technique twice after I busted a CV going up Surprise Canyon up in the Panamints outside Deathvalley. It seemed to work. That road isn't very 2wd accessable.

I think RCV is the only one making aftermarket shafts but they are spendy.

I'd reccommend signing up for pirate4x4 and PMing vendors in the Axle section with what you are looking for. They don't post prices publicly and I think it is because they are below the manufacturer's set minimum advertising price.

unless something has changed super recently, rcv doesnt make shafts for our first gen tacomas
