Will the 3rd gen Tacoma’s command the same resale and reliability as the 1st and 2nd gens?

More so curious what you long time Tacoma owners think about the 3rd gens and if history will repeat itself with this truck.

I bought the truck, hoping to make it to 200k at least over the next 15-20 years or so, just so I don’t have to buy another truck until I’m well on my way to 40 years old.

Probably a dumb question, but I’m bored at work and have been considering selling the Tacoma and buying a Civic Si or something more fuel efficient.

I love the truck, and honestly if it’s going to be as reliable as previous gens I’d be crazy to sell it, I think, considering it’s pretty damn near paid off.

But I’ve been missing spending $25 to fill up a car, and a stick shift that I can modify.

That being said I’ll probably be really happy I have this thing when I’m making an 800 mile round trip from VA to OH in some sort of blizzard

But if an econobox fits your needs better, do that. Cheaper to just rent a 4WD for your once a year trip. If I didn't need 4WD and a truck bed regularly, I'd be driving a Civic as well.

 

I love the 3gen. But it's also the first and only pick up I've ever owned and one of only two I've ever driven (a real old manual Mazda) so I am completely biased . I don't use the 4w drive regularly but I find I love working on it and making it my own. You can do this with other cars, and with the exception of maybe the Civic, I feel like few cars and trucks would be as easy to work on as this one. I had a manual Z51 08' Vette before this truck. And I do miss that speed demon, but this truck can do so much more for the price of some speed. I don't think you can beat a mid size pick up for practicality, even with the added expense of gas.

I would say, you made your decision, stick with it. Ultimately, it would defeat the purpose of a long term buy (which this is) if you keep trading your cars/trucks in for greener pastures. If you do it will never be a long term buy like you planned and you'll lose out on some money even with a Tacoma whenever you trade in. It sounds to me like you're just missing your old car, nothing wrong with that, but if you buy another car, you might start missing the pick up truck again...and around and around you go .

Chances are you'll own several different vehicles between now and then, even if you do find one you absolutely love, something else will catch your eye.

I've sold/traded cars and trucks that were perfect in every way, not a single mechanical issue, but I had no interest in continuing to drive them for another 5-15 years.

 

Uh, but if it’s nearly paid off, then just keep it, pay it off, and get an older play car that has cheap parts and a decent aftermarket following. Just my $0.02

 

Two things: If you are in your 20's (this explains some things) A) odds are you won't get to 50K with this vehicle before you trade, let alone 200K and B) if you are traveling the southern route from VA to OH (64,81,64,77,79) you won't make it through WV without a robust 4WD in the winter. I live near the I64 - I77 intersection on top of the mountain near the ski resort. We get a lot of snow and the mountain bike trails are good.

 

If it's truly almost paid off just pay it off but continue payments to yourself every month then buy a commuter

 

This one would probably last longer.

 

I had a Civic awhile back and it spent too much time in the shop for my taste but do what makes you happy, life is way too short to have regrets. Toyotas have traditionally held their value very well and I expect the same with the Gen 3. Personally I love my truck, I just completed a 5 day trip at just over 1,200 miles of freeway and dirt roads in Eastern Oregon and Western Idaho and she took everything I threw at her. I haven't had any of the troubles you read about here with lack of power or wacky transmission shifting. I got 23 MPG on this trip so no complaints there either.

 

When you hit your early to mid 30's, the supermarket bag-boy will ask you if that's your son's car.... Stick with your Tacoma, it's a good ROI (return on investment).

 

More than happy I didn’t buy the Pro. Knowing I have a 43k vehicle getting 20mpgs that is used for commuting, hauling dirtbikes and fishing equipment.

A paid for car really offsets the cost of buying a little more gas.

Nope, (Edit: except aFe intake) I was considering getting the tune but to be honest I don't feel that I need it. I was passing semi's at 80 up some of the long grades in the Blue Mountains of Oregon with the wife yelling at me to slow down! (never took it over 90 (Edit: ish) though)

That's easy. Contribute max to matching into your 401K, split it into three separate risk groups (high, normal and low) and forget about it for the next 40 years. Don't move it or touch it and you will have a nice retirement. When you get a raise, put half (pre tax) of your percentage increase into a Roth. You still get a raise, you now have a Roth and you never missed the money. Boom.

 

Born and raised in Colorado where we see a lot of the white stuff, and the absolute most important thing to traction and safety in the snow is winter/snow tires. The absolute best 4x4 with mediocre or worse tires is no match for a Civic with good snow tires. It's definitely not imperative to have a 4x4 in the winter - good snow tires are key.

 

I'm very happy with every aspect of my 2017 Tacoma. Having never owned a Tacoma, my thoughts related to its future residual value and necessary dealership related service expenses were non~issues for me.

.....but maybe I should worry.
