Howdy, I just got my last extended warranty check up, which was at 45K miles. All the oil changes, filter changes, rotations, etc will now be out of pocket. What do you guys recommend I do? Should I go for synthetic oil? How often do I change it out? Should I put some K&N oiled filters in there? Should I put some dry ones? Should I just get the whole K&N intake? How often do I clean those filters out? I also wanna try and save a little gas, I went from 14mpg to 18mpg (sometimes 16mpg depending on the climate) by simply doing what someone else here mentioned of not revving it past 2000 rpms. I just got a throttle body spacer, but have yet to install it. Is there something else I can add to see an increase in mpg? Thanks in advance guys!

How one never gets above 2,000 RPMs is beyond my comprehension ?

Well I just accelerate slowly but not too slow. Sometimes the transmission gets stuck in a lower gear so I pump the gas a tiny bit and sure enough it lowers the RPMs.

Read this https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/mpg-fyi-why-your-tacoma-gets-what-it-gets.558085/ I wrote it for posts like yours.
Oh, your truck came with synthetic oil and all 0W-20, which is what belongs in your truck, is synthetic.
Air filters, spacers or different intakes will not help with mpg. Driving style is only change you can make.
As far as you not exceeding 2K rpms, how many hours does it take you to get to 60 mph?

The specs require synthetic so obviously you should use full synthetic. Other than that, do whatever mods you want! Have fun.

I didn't really make it for gas saving tips. I made it more so that I know what type of filters/oils I would need to run in the truck to get the most life out of it and what kind of maintenance they require. so far I've been changing the oil every 10K miles. Does that sound about right? If I get some oiled/dry filters how often do I need to cleen/oil them?

Did your truck come with an owners manual?

Hard to go wrong with that for your lubricant specs, intervals and filters.

There are very few 'mods' that will improve MPG. Lots of things folks fuss about on the 3rd gen are actually caused by Toyota trying to bump up MPG for the EPA goals.

However, the Corolla conversion is guaranteed to help with MPG .

Use Toyota filters, and whatever synthetic oil blows your hair back. The filter is important, so don’t cheap out on it.

Ok so I already ordered a corolla engine. Should I get a corolla transmission too? Or will it do fine with the original Tacoma transmission?

Cheaper to get the whole running car. :D

A 2000 model should be cheap to buy and do great on the MPGs.

Just follow the maintenance intervals located in the manual.

As far as MPG. Keeping RPMs low or driving like a littler old lady going to church wont save MPG.

I drive every car I have ever had like a race car fast acelleration and late hard braking and I manage 19.5.

I averaged 18.7 going up to 10.000 feet with RPMs at 3500-4000

    Best of luck.

We all know your numbers are bullshit because if your gas cost went down by more than double that means you stopped buying gas or your MPG went up by more than double so you averaging 30+ mpg?

$500 monthly gas to low $200s by using low revs HAHAHA.

I'm out before I do something to get reported

K&N filters are a waste of money. They don't improve fuel mileage. They do add a few HP, but only if you're driving in the 5000 rpm range. In other words in a race car they MIGHT net you 2-3 more MPH on the top end. That MIGHT make the difference between 1st and 2nd place. But in an every day vehicle they don't help. In fact they don't filter the air as well.

Use synthetic oil. Do what you're comfortable with, but lots of folks, myself included change synthetic at 10,000 miles. I'm at 190,000 and have been doing that since new and I've never added a drop of oil between oil changes. There have been people posting here with double that many miles that did the same.

Drive sensibly, but don't get hung up on 2000 rpm's. Although that isn't a bad rule of thumb. But there are times when you need to rev up the engine. I've never owned a vehicle that wouldn't at least match the EPA estimates, and sometimes I exceed them. And I often drive 70 mph on the hwy. I just don't try to set a new 0-60 time getting there. That will kill fuel mileage. I'm usually between 2000-2500 rpm's and still get just under 20mpg. With a 4X4 DC.

How are you only getting 18mpg if you never go over 2,000rpm?

Honestly, I changed a couple other things. I dont floor it to try and beat the slow start person who only goes 55 in a 55 when I want to do 60. I dont drive 85 in the passing lane I do 68 in the middle lane, and if some guy is doing 65 I dont floor it to pass him and do 68 right infront of him. Ive also been driving just a little bit less lately. So thats what im attributing to less gas consumption.
