That's what got mine and I knew better. Got in a hurry and left it on HI when I got out and the next startup got it.

Yep, dealer confirmed the blower is fucked, part on backorder for the forseeable future. No loaner. Good thing it's not hot in Virginia.

How is this your fault? Plus, on mine there is no way to put it on low if I forget before I shut it off and remember before I start it next time. My list of things to treat a certain way and remember to do for this truck is getting longer and longer. 1. Do not slide out as the fabric is weak. 2. Do not leave hvac on high as the blower motor is weak. 3. Do not power wash the roof as the center mounted brake light is weak. 4. Do not lift the truck over an 1” as the needle bearing is weak. 5. Do not overload the bed as the leaf springs are weak. 6. Do not drive on the highway as the windshield and paint are weak...

Understood. I just think you don’t “need to know better”. The chance of accidentally leaving the system on high then making no way to put it on low with models that have dual climate control should have been factored into the blower motor design.

Then, what about those of us that want remote start and purposely would leave the blower on high to quickly cool off or heat up the truck? This is bad design 101.

Totally agree. I have the non-auto old school whatever you call it with the knob. Now it's mash brake, push start button, push ECT, push CC and shift to sport mode to activate SSP. I'll have to add in check HVAC knob before pushing start... Pre-flight damn checklist.

Unknown lift, maybe 2" I don't know how to ID it, and would rather set it back to stock.
There must be a variety of sources for just the plastic fan part, there just can't be that many different fans out there. Has anyone tried this part? Since so many of our vehicles are still under warranty, likely there have not been too many innovators out there coming up with alternatives other than take it to dealer. We need to start accumulating a list of options for this.

    http://www.partstrain.com/store/?N=...294966567&Nr=AND(part:A/C Blower Motor Wheel)

With enough of us having this problem, and forums such as this have clever and innovative members who like to fix their own stuff, and post up their results. We're bound to come up with some options on this one. I haven't gone fishing thru junk yards yet to pull out various fan motors/fans, but if I can slay a few dragons that are tying up all my discretionary time, I could give it a shot. All I'm looking for is a fan that will work, not the motor.

Just thinking about my '86 SR5 4X Pickup, 32 years and never had a fan/blower problem.........

TJstreets--how long ago was this repair done, how has it held up? Looks like some JB cold weld in there as well.

I do have small hose clamps, just didn't want to use one as it seems it would throw it out of balance more than my Clamptite wire would.

If I do end up with a new one, or some sort of aftermarket replacement plastic fan, I would like to fashion some form of a reinforcing sleeve, like part of the an appropriately sized bullet casing, or plumbing sleeve from a compression fitting--I used this in the past to repair a dial on an Oster toaster oven that would otherwise have gone into the rubbish. It lasted years until the timer fried.

I'm certain these are made from the wrong type plastic for the application, and lack appropriate reinforcement. My cage was made in Mexico. Not sure where others are finding theirs were made. It isn't all that difficult to have made these with the type reinforcement I have described. Many other components made from plastic that slip onto a shaft w a flat side to it are made with a metal reinforcement clip: HVAC knobs in Jeep TJ for example. In searching for parts, it seems the '16-'17 have the same part number, but different from other Tacoma models: 87103-04050 Is anyone coming up with other verifiable information/part numbers or interchangeability?

My thoughts are fairly light weight close to the center should minimize the out of balance if it is too bad I can always clip a fan blade or two to balance it

clamp not really likely to unbalance it too awful much, it is on the central axis rather on the periphery. I'm going to let mine run for a while w the clamptite wire fix, and consider a lot of other options. One of course being letting them put a new one in at their expense at Toyota even though it tends to inconvenience me.

That's the one I ordered and received. Same as what broke initially. I know it's the right one but everything looks exactly the same so I don't think any design changes have happened. I'm rockin' the high strength epoxy repair for now and it's holding up just fine. New one is in the box on the ready just in case.

Thanks for that suggestion. I ended up replacing the blower motor for less than $50 a couple of months ago and no issues since.

I'll keep your suggestion in mind about blowing dirt off the resistor in case something happens in the future...

I have not seen a Clamptite in decades and your picture reminded me of its handiness. This is a perfect fix. Everyone needs one of these and a spool of wire in their toolbox.

Bought it from a Vendor at SEMA 3 years ago. Handy little tool.

I have seen them on TV for years and have thought about buying one too, pretty neat way to make a clamp.

This just happened in my 17 two weeks ago! It completely broke for me. If i put the fan on even the lowest speed, it sounded like fan blades broke off inside a desktop fan.. I brought it to the dealer and the tech pulled it out and epoxy'd it back together. They ordered a blower motor (newer, improved model from what I've read on message boards) but, like everyone else, it is backordered... Just hoping the epoxy holds up until then. Just have to keep the speeds low.

What about passing a Corolla, or towing heavy?

Also looks like these frames might be weak too...just like the last 2 generations :anonymous:
