With you 100%. Just because someone else's rig made it x amount of miles without needing it doesn't mean yours will. Toyota has such a great rep because their averages are much higher than their competitors (if you can even say they compete). I'm blown away at what people are willing to call them about to try and get covered. Because if someone called me saying their gasket leaked after 148k miles and 10+ years later I would die laughing. Things fail... its life. There will always be out casts that go 1 million miles and ones that barely make it past 100k. It's a mechanical system.

BUT it still has nothing to do with the OP. so I stand by my post. Just dont push hard. I'm not standing too firm.

 

So I'm curious... how much maintenance have you done with Toyota and at their dealerships to feel entitled that they owe you (or any of us) a recall on what is a non safety related and considered to be a "life expectancy" part.

So... I have a 2005 4.0 v6 with 87000 Miles. Opened the radiator cap and started it. Watched for bubbles and nothing. Thinking it would be a good idea just to get the gasket problem fixed before anything even starts to get ffff’d. Just looking for some 2cents on this. Anything helps.

 

If you have no problems then leave it

 

I second this. Replacing the head gasket is not a preemptive sort of repair. It’s very involved and very expensive.

Hello all, im a die hard toyota fan ever since my friend had his 84 4runner. I was amazed how it hauled our hunting stuff and big asses up the sides of mountains with a 4 banger and stick.
My first 4 runner was a 97. I had 235k on it and my wife thought it was going to be trouble. I sold it for $4600 and the guy couldn't give it to me fast enough.
I got a 2003 limited v8. Powerful and nice, but i couldn't deal with the gas. 11-14 mpg! I drive 25k a year. I found a 2003 limited v6 that was 9 years old with 49k on it. I still have it with only 120k, just rolled over to 120. Theres almost nothing you cant fix on these for the sales tax on a new vehicle!
The reason i ended up here is i was thinking About getting a Tacoma and a friend of mine at the gun range was selling his. He said he blew a head gasket in it and it cost them over $4000 to fix. So I started searching online for known problems with head gaskets and found this site.

So, my wife, girlfriend at the time, had an 87 celica GT that said it was overheating, but it never did. Honest mechanics said it was not the head gasket. A dealer shop said it was and charged $650 back in the day, but that did not fix the problem. I should have changed the sensor. That was the worst problem i ever had with toyota. And the shops are usually independent from the dealership or from the manufacturer.

I strayed a couple years ago and bought a Subaru outback. I had nothing but problems.

In the 80s my father had an oldsmobile and chevy caprice. What junk. Lucky to get 60K out of them . When i discovered Toyota's could go over 100k...even 300k i was hooked. So for me anything over 150 is gravy! Stuff wears and breaks. You have to be a little lucky. Weather and climate play a big factor in longevity... expansion and contraction, moisture and salt, etc. Im in SO Cal now so the weather is the best in the country. Cars last a long time.

This was at 168K km so right around 100K miles. Symptoms were 'whooshing' waterfall sound behind the dash, and blowing coolant out of the expansion tank. Tests came back with exhaust in the cooling system.

 

Man...get over yourself. No way is Toyota responsible for a 14 year old vehicle with over 140k miles. Pony up for the repairs or find a replacement motor. Geesh!

 

Although I agree with you 100%, it’s been exactly 2 years, to the day, since she was last on TW.

I had the bubble problem and my head gasket def was the problem i used steel steal and boom it fixed my truck and i never had a problem after that and it cost me only 120

Typically it is MINOR. Little bit of pink crust external coolant leak. My 2014 is leaking on both banks. I just check the coolant level every service. Typically hits the low mark in the overflow every 5k miles

Edit I have 154k and it has been leaking since 120kish
