I have no doubts that Marines are using them but if he's part of the Raiders Im sure he's using equipment not everyone has. Im still pretty sure it would be a private or unit purchase.

Obviously I've been out for a little while and not up to date on everything. With that being said I'm far from being an expert on what they're using now. I just hope they're getting the best gear they can have to accomplish the task at hand.

    Yep yep yep.

I remember my marine buddy telling me that when he got to Iraq the first time, there were a ton of army guys without sapi plates because of a supply issue.. I can’t wrap my mind around that one.

Also, sorta unrelated.. back in WW2, as they are outfitting you.. I would have been so damn pissed if I got handed the M1 Carbine over the Garand lol. I’ve got an actual WW2 Carbine and I would not want that to be my primary weapon.. glorified 9mm...

I have my grandfather's issued 1911 even though it was essentially just for his dress uniform since he didn't carry a weapon. His weapon was the captain of a mine sweeper converted/modified to chase and destroy U-boats off the east coast. Before he got Alzheimer's he could point on a map where they took some out and it was scary close to the coastline.

I've got a Garand from that era as well not sure if it ever saw any action though. Right now my focus is WW1 arms collecting which countries pretty much fielded whatever they could get their hands on even though there were your most common there were major shortages of weapons. Countries fielded everything from Krags to black powder wheel guns. I find WW1 weapons far more interesting probably because of the speed at which cartridges and weapons developed since smokeless powder and metallic cartridges came about just prior. My prized possession is a French Label.

Oh nice! I’ve got my crosshairs on a Garand, Mauser pistol (the broom handle?), a Luger, and a M1903. Once I have those, I’ll consider my collection of war era arms complete. I don’t know why I don’t really branch out much.. may just be a subconscious money issue lol.

My uncle had a nickel plated and engraved 193x 1911 and man that thing was breathtaking. Had a chance to buy his entire collection several years back but couldn’t afford it. Still kicking myself for being a cheap bastard cause truth was I had the money

I'm a firm believer in the military having the right gear to complete the mission no matter the branch. Each one has their role to play.

I have no problem with the M1 or M2 carbine. Just keep in mind it was originally designed to replace the pistol as the sidearm. Its defiently apples to oranges in comparison to the M1 Garand but it had it's role also.

It kinda falls in line when the M16 went into to service (once they learned from their mistakes). Not everyone needed a rifle with a full length stock and 20" barrel so they introduced the CAR-15 with a telescoping stock and 11.5" barrel to make it more compact which came popular with radio operators, platoon and squad leaders, and SOF units for its compact size. There were other variants in that timeframe but the y were never fielded widespread.

The carbine was also meant for guys that were in artillery and other non infantry roles so they didn't have to tote around a heavy ass garand and the ammunition for it. Plus it's much more handy of a weapon compared the the long heavy Garand.

Ummmm my collection will never be complete. I like modern arms but I have a big affinity for older stuff and obscure weapons. Plus the collector value of some of my stuff may help in retirement or just gets handed down to kiddo and she can do what she wishes with them.

Yea if I ever become filthy rich I’d go a bit further.. but til then those are my goals lol.

I’ve also got a lot of modern rifles and handguns, my MSAR being my baby. My dad bought the Carbine from a police auction in the 70s for 60 bucks. When he passed and I brought all his guns to NC I started looking at the Carbine and realized it was all matching SNs with a production date of 42. Don’t know if it actually saw any action overseas but still cool. I’ve got one screw in it above the trigger that isn’t correct that I need to replace.. other than that, she’s mint and shoots like a dream

Which reminds me of my other point lol... I don’t own any guns I don’t shoot... and to own a extremely rare or expensive weapon from history would be tough.. cause I’d want to shoot it regularly. Problem with the Garand is that modern 30-06 isn’t good for them so ammo is expensive (all based on what I’ve been told)

Part of what I was saying as in having their role and using the M16 as an example. It was a weapon of the time which is still popular and had it's part in coming of with weapons of today.

I should dig through my garage and find my books on guns and development and the history they are really interesting. I think you would like some of them because they talk about where designers get their inspiration from. By the way most are just on a certain designer or gun.

I have never heard that about modern ammo and the garand that gun is built like a tank. I shoot modern through mine just range ammo nothing crazy like some of the hot hunting rounds and don't have any issues. The rounds that the soldiers used in WW2 were pretty damn hot, I've shot some old milsurp and that stuff is pretty stout. Plus the ammo of that era was rougher on the guns than modern ammo. The carbine got a bad rap from some guys because of ammo issues. I don't own a gun I won't shoot except a few non shooter (dangerous) wall hangers. In the gun collecting world it's better to have them in shooting condition and have the ability to shoot them than wall hanger status. Now some of the guns on my want list the ammo is extinct so that creates a problem.

I am on the hunt for a Pederson device which is a grail for me. I have a few guns designed by Pederson he's probably one of my favorite gun designers.
