    Back to rust:

I think ALL vehicles have some rust unless there is a coating to keep air and water off of the iron. I don't know how you get around it. I'm not a chemical engineer or physicist so I might be saying a bunch of crap but from what I understand if it has iron and gets in contact with oxygen rust occurs. Iron(Fe) and oxygen(O) atoms love each other and really have a strong chemical bond. A small film of iron oxide (rust) forms but then it actually acts as a barrier to slow down future rust because less oxygen comes in contact with the unrusted iron. Add water and now there's more oxygen molecules to rust the iron faster. The challenge is to have the rust form slower than the usable life of the iron part.

In my history with new cars I never get undercoating anymore. If the undercoating fails, water get between the coating and iron and actually speeds up the rusting process. I just leave the frame bare so it can dry faster. Cleaning mud and dirt from the frame helps keep moisture away from the iron so that only the oxygen in the air causes surface rust at a much slower rate.

I apologize if I'm spewing crap but my advice and understanding is worth the price you paid.

I understand how having rust on a brand new truck is frustrating but what do you expect? Its an unpainted piece.
Why is the dealership held responsible? Its technically not "new".
Call Toyota and tell em to paint it for the next gen.

Depending on where it was it can easily develop rust overnight. I guess this reminds me that 3rd Jenners don't like to get their hands dirty...
Get it off and spray it.

True, but LA guys don’t like to drive anywhere because it takes 3 hours to get to the point where you say it will take 3 hours lol. We pay $7k more because traffic has scared us for life, our health and sanity has already suffered. It’s either $7k in happiness locally or $7k in hospital deductibles and bills during or after the return trip, that bad now, yes.

I'm not exactly sure how it works, but my buddy bought a Nissan Frontier when he was stationed in Colorado in the Army, and when he moved back to CA they made him pay like 3-4 grand in taxes. Thats a pretty big difference for a $30,000 truck.

Hmmm... not sure but I bought a car in UT a few years ago and they just charged me a few hundred dollars to make up the difference between UT taxes and CA taxes.

Yeah I guess CA has been having problems with people buying cars out of state for cheaper and then selling them in CA or something like that. Thats what some rep told my buddy when he complained about having to pay.

Maybe because his truck was registered out of state already they charged him more money to register it in CA? :notsure:

Pull up the weather stipping on the bottom of the door frame on drivers side door and you'll see the spotwelds under the rubber weather stipping rusting out.

@18TrdPro There is a product called Chemprime that you can spray on the rust. It neutralizes it and prevents future rust. It leaves a slight white coating once it reverts the rust. I use it on wheel hubs to prevent rust.

Chemprime removes, kills and converts rust to a rust preventative compound, or rust inhibitor. A rusted metal surface that has been properly treated with Chemprime and painted will not fail because of rust bleed through. With Chemprime, paint or primer adhere much better because the zinc strontium phosphate film actually permits a locking effect at the paint interface with the steel rather than ordinary paint adhesion.

Really lol ?? Guess I’m exempt from no dirty hands because I have my 2004 still also. But just a question:)....is it that 2nd gen people have to get they’re hands dirty? Maybe because they break down more frequently and the warranty is gone :bananadance:

Don't use fluid film inside your nice smelling new truck unless you like the smell of sweaty socks. That $hit stinks!

I didn't read the entire thread, but yes, that rust is normal. If you are concerned about it, spray some oil or something at it, but it's just surface rust from manufacturing processes and will not cause any issues.

PS: Don't pull your dash out, or you'll find similar rust all over things like your reinforcement bar.

Haha, can't speak for 2nd genners but yes, more maintenance on first gen requires you to figure it out and get dirty.

Also, I think that a new truck attracts a different crowd. A type that doesn't want to get dirty. You think "new", reliable. With a first gen you'll be spending a lot on maintenance unless you do the work yourself. That separates the type of buyer. Lot of people don't know how.

I bought my truck knowing I wanted to beat on it and modify it with no regrets.
Could buy a third gen but I'd be too worried about touching it/wheeling it.

I do think that with 3rd gens you get a different crowd.

We're in a rust affected state according to Toyota, at least with respect to frame rot in the 1st and 2nd (and soon 3rd) gens. Plenty of people getting new frames here thanks to CDOT now using salt brine.
