Crappy frames from previous gens aside, It's not the salt that makes your frame rot it's the repeated total lack of preventative maintenance and winter maintenance that does it.

Normal within about 20 minutes after it cools from hot forming temp ranges.

Every generation of Toyota trucks and 4Runners has godawful rust issues. Tundras, Tacomas, even the Japan-built 4Runners have rusted to death.

I guess I’ll throw some coins in the pot too:

I used to get ticked off when I’d find something wrong with my truck (the problems that are not real issues) and point a finger and then search the forums to see if anyone else had a problem too. But then I realized I was obsessing with the bad things about my truck and not he good things I loved about the truck. So right after I realized it I just started taking care of the things myself. I started adding things that Toyota left out or getting rid of the things I didn’t like that came from Toyota (Like the way they have their button cluster layout BTW thanks @mesojdm in advance for making that cubby switch plate now my OCD can be calmed) We have amazing modders here at Tacoma world @mesojdm, @Hoangde and great vendors like @CaliRaisedLed and @kustom54lighting that can help you make your truck YOUR truck! We have great community that is really creative and smart about Tacoma’s. I’ve had 3 Tacoma’s and I’d have those trucks over some over priced America truck any day. They’re reliable and have amazing resale value (my 2nd gen Tacoma was worth more when I sold it than when I bought it used). They had surface rust too but I can say this the engine on my 1st Tacoma went 200,000+ no issue just did the routine maintenance. My friends F-150 he had to replace the water pump after 40,000 miles and continued to have issues. Anyway my coins are all gone but no ones going to fix your problems but yourself.

Not at all. My YJ was fairly rust free being in Colorado for about 30 years. It spent 2 years in VA never driven in winter and it exploded in rust.

Edit: Surface rust aside most major rust issues are due to a lack of water evaporation or drainage.

It most cases it wouldn’t have mattered what you did because the water is trapped in a location you can’t service.

Proper maintenance of the frame with a protectant will prevent frame rust no matter how much salt your road crews use, no matter what salt they use, be it rock salt, brine, or tears of third gen owners.

Nope. Major rust issues occur in areas you can’t service.

EDIT: My F250 lower door panel rusted from the inside out completely because water would not fully evaporate. Tacoma frame rot issues also occurred around the bod mounts because water couldn’t drain.

I clean, paint and Fluid Film at least once a year and every time the sliders come off there's bubbles of rust. I can't do that down in the boxed sections so I can only trust the factory paint, the Eastwood internal frame spray I did and Fluid Film I do down there. But @crolison did that stuff too AFAIK and he ended up with a new frame on a truck that was always in Colorado.

Yup if your truck has lived in Colorado it’s whole life rust is not an issue or even talked about.
Here’s my frame that’s 22 years old with 568,000 miles. It’s rust free with maybe a dusting of surface rust on the leaf springs, and apparently the brake pedal was painted at the factory on the 1st gen, so no rust there for me. It’s about the state you live in if you will have rust. So if you have rust on the pedal now it’s a sign of things to come.

If its just a matter of water evaporation then why did your YJ not rust in Colorado but rusted in Virginia? Your YJ never saw rain in colorado? Never drove through snow?

Well humidity is a big factor with barely any at 9200 feet, less than 5% That said water was never trapped in any part of my Jeep like it was the truck. So water or mag chloride wasn’t just sitting there. The truck however did trap water and with it being white didn’t generate enough heat to evaporate. The mag choloride it did pick up couldn’t be easily rinsed.

That's incredibly clean. Nice. I hate rust so I do high pressure washes and Fluid Film and that means I have a constant gooey mess under my truck. I didn't initially Fluid Film the 1991 for the first 14 years of its life, just lots of time in car washes, but that last 10 in my possession (it came from Burt, I bought it from the original owner in 1999 and sold it in 2015) I did and it didn't look half that good. It had rust developing in a few spots on the frame (manageable) but the body wasn't nearly as immune and the bed was starting to get a lot of seam rust and fractures. It only had 300,000 miles on it, too. My 2008 originally came from Stevinson (I got it from Pedersen in Ft. Collins, the original owner traded it in) and it's rusting a lot faster than the 1991 did for sure.

BTW, found the start of the B.S. where Chris found the perforation. He did do the same internal frame coating and Fluid Films like I do and it still rusted through. He got a new frame just recently from Toyota. A Colorado truck, always in and around Denver.

I bought my truck new in Denver, after it snows I always wash the truck at car wash and with the frame blaster, Im sure that has helped, the new trucks will have issues too if not cleaned
