Putting New Fender Flares on 2018 SR5 That Already Has Fender Flares

Thank you everyone for your input and information. I went ahead and got the Bushwackers. After installing them and using them for a few days, I feel like they are too big for my truck! I believe that is due to my small tire and wheel size. I am thinking of taking them off and plasti-dipping my OEM fender flares black. That means I get the black color and they will be more form fitting to my truck. Check out the pictures to see the bushwackers on my truck:

Hi all!

I currently have a blue 2018 SR5 tacoma that came with painted fender flares (pic below).

I wanted to put black fender flares on and had a couple questions about them.

How hard of an install is it? Are there any installation videos roaming around?

Are there different size flares? If so, what is the most popular option? I see lots that are “ 1.75" Front Tire Coverage 1.75" Rear Tire Coverage ” is that the factory OEM size?

Last question: some of the blacks are "textured" some are plain. I know if you want to paint the FF's you have to get the plain version. But if i am not painting it, will the plain version scratch easy so I should go for textured?

one word....Bushwacker

 

Go with genuine bushwhacker, you know what brand you are getting.
Easy to put on.
Use 3M clear protective body tape where the flare meets the body plus 3/16 or so.
20 minutes each flare taking your time applying the tape.
Put flare on with a couple of bolts to hold. Trace with grease pencil on body 1/4 inch up from contact point. Take flare off, apply clear tape to just under grease pencil mark. Flare back on. Remove grease pencil with goo b gone.
Very simple to do.
Smooth doesn't seem to scratch but I haven't seen them abused. I would go smooth.

Btw I can't stand the oem factory flares. They are so station wagony.

I feel the opposite. I’m already running 35’s and when I tried on my buddies black bushwackers... it looked to big.

Just have them painted satin Black and call it good. Like all painted surfaces they can scratch but should look good. The fender flares are all the same size.

 

Could always get them LineX'ed and then don't have to really worry about scratches.

Theres a Taco in my town that is 100% LineX'ed. I bit much in my opinion but he always offroads and doesn't care about my rocks or branches anymore. Did add like 450ish lbs to the truck though .

Those tires actually look like they are out past those skinny thin flares.
Bushwackers would look great imo.

 

Linex what you have,why would you waste money on do nothing flares.

On a black truck they blend.
I think if they were blue it would look right.

 

BW are not in scale with your truck as it sits.
My advice would be to get OEM non-painted flares and do 3M clear wrap.
This will be what you are seeking.

 

Color matched bushwhackers look nice.

 

Looks funny Imo without lift and tires, color matching should help though

I don't know what you mean by "do nothing flares"? Are you referring to the stock OEM ones? I have my stock OEM ones off of the truck so I was going to plasti dip them (not a lot of $). How do I line X?

 

By do nothing,I mean your truck already had flares,so buy something you already have .

 

With fender flares like that you need to be running 35's with a 6" lift in my opinion.
