I know there are 1,000 threads on diff whine and chain noise etc. however, i am hearing a cyclical metal on metal type noise from my drivers rear. Not a diff whine or howl but like something is touching as the wheel rotates. I cant tell if it gets louder with turning. It starts around 20 mph or so and isn’t associated with braking so I dont think its in the drum although I’m gonna pull it and look anyway. I jacked it and pulled on the wheel with no real play like a bad bearing. I’m kind of lost. I do have a leaking 5100 rcd exr length billy on that side that i have to replace. Its not a squeak from my dakars. Anyone have any ideas?

Put it on jack stands and run it up, cheap stethoscope can tell a lot.

I usually only diag front wheel bearings with play. The rear axle bearing is tougher and usually requires me to run up the speed to about 50kph on a hoist.

Usually if the bearing is bad, you can hear the "growl" by simply putting your head near the wheel while its spinning. The stethoscope just helps pinpoint the noise to the bearing.

The bearing is located in a 1" metal cup between the drum backing plate and the axle housing.

    Lubed all u joints?
    Tightened all u bolts?

Thanks for that. I have honestly never had a rear bearing go out on me before. I was just checking it like I would the front. Thanks for the info

I lubed u joints about 300 miles ago, U bolts were retightened at the same time I was under rolling around in grease. I have lubed my leaf packs but haven’t shimmed them.

Edit: med duty dakar leaf pack I installed about 15,000 miles ago give or take 1-200 miles

Edit Edit: u bolts were at proper torque setting , they didnt actually take any turns. No extension on torque wrench.

Then could be a bad wheel bearing like stated above or a warped drum.

There’s been several reports of drums going out and being replaced.

Well, I'm 99.9% sure its the bearing after putting a stethoscope on it. My problem is it is the retainers are press fit and I have no press. No real reliable mechanics as I do all of my own maintenance and most of my repair but this is my first experience with rear bearing. Dealership says they can fit me in around 3 weeks. I laughed a lot and hung up the phone. I may be stuck with going to sit at the dealer and trying to get fit in somewhere. :frusty::puke:

Not sure the failing/replaced drums are warped.

More likely they are out of round from an improper casting.

Yea, I'm likely being picky, but there is so much 'warped' info flying around regarding rotors and drums, there's likely some value in using the right terms.

Just buy these $330 for two you can do it yourself, good to get both sides, because the other side may be on its way out, as well. I’m sure it would be much cheaper and faster than the dealer/service.

I see you have a '16. Out of warranty I guess?

You don't need a mechanic per se, you need a machine shop with a press.

Sometimes even NAPA stores have them. If there is a shop that rebuilds differentials in your area, they'll have one too. Make some calls, you'll likely find one.

Thanks for the link , that's tougher on the wallet but easier on the mind and time for sure. Definetly would be easier just to swap the entire assembly.

Edit: after checking with his page on tw here, it looks as if he hasn't been building any hubs, or at least shipping them. I guess I'll look at trdparts4u or similar.

Yea, out of warranty by about 4,000 miles. smh. that's true, didn't think about using a press from a machine shop . Thanks
