It's freaking hot in Helena, low 90's this mountain guy isn't used to this heat. Solar is barely getting any use. Little generator is getting its workout running the AC. Spot for the week.

Yup, indeed. Now DaveInGJ, previously known as DaveInDenver, then DaveInLoveland. One last pull tomorrow after closing on the sale of the last tie to the Front Range.

I've been at Ft Hunter Liggett since the 5th. Terrible planning, we've had hot chow 4 total times, every other meal has been MREs.
And that tent that went down by the helecoptor luckily wasn't near me. I'm ready to get outta here and finish up summer.

Nice. When I went up to Billings on my trip... I nearly died when I rolled down the window getting off the interstate and realized it was over 100 degrees. I got plumbing parts from Home Depot that I needed for my extra water storage tank, ate some early dinner, and had a few ice cream cones from McDonalds before hauling ass to the same area you're in where it was much cooler. Stopped in the Lewis and Clark NF to camp and on night number two at 2am was when I heard a noise that turned out to be scratching under the hood. Two kangaroo rats that it took about an hour to evict from the engine bay and I ended up parking alongside the highway since I did not want them back.

Stay in the mountains... dont go into the plains unless you want to melt.

I guess I'm a real overlander now. Pretty soon I'll have a spikey shovel even! I even had passerby's asking if I was on expo portal last weekend.

    What's wrong with that?!

I started a thread a few weeks ago for info on beetles since i didn't want to start a new account on thesamba. Lots of good info although it keeps narrowing the search.

We are now headed east. Have to be in Illinois for a family reunion August 5th. Was planning on stopping in Cody and then Cheyenne for frontier days but every RV park and campground is sold out. Changing up our plans and will be hitting up Mount Rushmore and then the bad lands. Might head to Minnesota after that to check out possible places to live up north near the border. Places are stupid cheap in that area. Never thought we would be looking into Minnesota...
Lakeside near Kalispell is at the top of our list so far. Not a fan of Helena.

Yeah you might be spreading yourself a little thin there. CB is somewhat out of the way given the other places mentioned. From what you initially said, I was going to suggest the Dunes, then up past Creede to Lake City (ish) stopping at North Clear Creek Falls in between, and take Cinnamon Pass (or Engineer) over down into Silverton, then up to Ouray for Imogene, down to Ophir to get back on 550 a bit north of Silverton and on down toward Durango and Mesa Verde then Cortez and Hovenweep (don't let Hovenweep fool you, the sites are spread out and it takes a full day to drive around to the majority of them). I've done all that in a couple of different trips, though for me it was Cinnamon down to Dunes in a day. One of my favorite experiences, going from 12 foot snow banks on either side of the truck to standing on a sand dune in the same day (that was earlier in the year than when you'll be here though, and if unlucky you might catch early snows up there). 5-6 days just isn't enough. You'll be back.

There are a few manual guys using it. Jast cap off the bottom. No clue if there is more manuals then auto.
