    Longrun road is nice excellent views.. you can drop off on Halls spring road from it too.comes out on top of Shenadoah mtn.2nd mountain was jeep/ATVS last i heard but not sure.pretty rough and Dictum use to be good.havnt be on any for years except LongRun

    All of these forest roads are on Google maps, almost any GPS, but if you want to roll paper get a Delorme Gazeteer.

    I use the DeLorme Gazateer for a large overview but also have a bunch of the USGS topo maps that are awesome for a more detailed map. What's not so awesome is you have to get a bunch of quadrants if you plan on traveling much distance.

    I have Gazetteers for every state we've ever visited. They are handy dandy maps. Other than that though we pretty much use Google and Gaia. We might get "lost" once in a while but that's the goal really - and we've always found our way back. :D

    Thanks I’ll have to find one. I don’t have a gps unit yet other than directions on my phone perhaps it’s something we should discuss as the more I want into this it seems necessary

    Where do you find the gazatteer just google it? Then you buy it for the state?

    I'm sure you can get it on line, my local Barnes & Noble has it and a few outdoor retailers have it too.

    Also check out the USGS site for detailed quadrant maps. If your planning a trip out Harrisonburg way I can get you started on which quadrants to order that cover Flagpole, Reddish, Second Mtn. etc.

    I need someone to sit down with me and explain and show me all this new fangled gps stuff. I'm good with paper maps hell behind the rear seat, glove box, and center console is full of them. But the conveince and ease of glancing at the route on a screen is so much better than a map in front of you on the steering wheel.

    YES that’s me as well I need somebody to give me a kick start, point me in the right direction, and help make sure I don’t screw up with what I get. As this adventure begins for us I want to make sure we are loaded with good information. I’m not exactly lazy when it comes to research but with some of this I just don’t know where to begin

    I will admit right here, that our usual modus operandi when it's just the wife and I is to decide a general location, picking a known mapped sight from the Gazeteer - something like a campground or waterfall.

    If it's a campground chances are Google can route you to it. When you get there, or near to there, we just start picking new roads. You see a little road come off the one you're on and think "where does that go?" Drive down it and see where it goes. Beth will usually follow where we are on the map. If we come to a gate, or find a dispersed campsite, or something cool, we'll mark the Gazetteer. We've "discovered" lots of cool stuff this way. We call this "dumbing around"

    We usually only run planned routes when we have an actual destination. Like oro vacation in Tennessee, after we found our campsite and set up we ventured to several destinations that did use the gps to route is to oro goal. Sometimes they were input as addresses, sometimes as coordinates but we always got close enough to our goal that we could find it.

    Kind of strange we were talking about Long Run Road.A truck ran off it tonite. one person killed.its steep and narrow goin up the mtn. not sure where the accident was.we use to ride the ditch going up in bear season when it was packed with ice and snow but once on the mountain you were good to go.hate to hear this
