    Out with the old!

    Got my truck regeared yesterday. Today I start the break in process. Man I can't believe I wait so long to regear, feels like a different truck now.

    Just got back from the dealer to order a new speedo gear, hopefully I choose the right tooth count. Letting it cool down, then back on the road.

    Damn, the stock R&P look like they are brand new, I expected to see at least some kind of wear with 214K mi on them.

    I run a larger trailer 6.5 feet tall inside double axle. Trailer has electric brakes and stop just fine even when loaded.

    I paid $955 OTD including full labor, meaning I just dropped off the truck to them.

    $250 Yukon 4.88 ring, pinion, & yoke.
    $185 master install kit
    $20 gear oil
    $500 labor
    (And $15 for a 12 pack of beer, they always take care of me)

    I was going to buy everything at ECGS, their prices were:

    $239 Yukon ring & pinion
    $51 yoke
    $245 master install kit

    So I saved $100 in parts & didn't have to wait for shipping. I dropped by, told em I was going to order the gears & asked if I needed to buy the master install kit, figured they would just have all that since they are a well known rear end shop. We got to talking & & turned out he was a Yukon dealer. He called them immediately & ordered the ring, pinion, & yoke before I even confirmed I wanted to get it done (I was going to anyway), said he wanted one to keep on the shelf anyway.

    Gave me the prices, said the gears would be in the next morning & if I dropped off my truck at 8am I would get it back the same day. So that's what I did. Worked out perfect & was awesome that I got it all done the very next day instead of having to wait for shipping from ECGS.

    If you have low miles or are confident your bearings are good you could probably save some money by just going with the pinion bearing kit. I got over 214K mi so I wanted all new bearings. And if you pull out the 3rd member yourself & take it to a shop you can save some labor money there too.

    If you have a lot of miles & haven't done so yet, I recommend getting your axle bearings & axles seals replaced too. One of my axle seals started leaking at 213K mi so I got new axle bearings & seals installed from the same shop a couple of months ago. So basically my rear end is fully rebuilt.

    Nope, dealer won't help you for speedometer calibration. Turns out the speedo gear swap won't work in my case, 2WD auto, larger gear won't fit, waste of $27. Speedo gear swap only works for the speedos that goes on the transfer case. I ended up buying a Dakota Digital & will install it next week. Was hoping the gear swap would work cause it's much quicker to do but at least with the magic black box I will be able to recalibrate the speedometer easily if I every change anything again.
