I have a 2010 FJ as most know. Its an Auto, 4wd, 2800 miles, bone stock. I have had it in 4lo before with no problems. Now when I tried to put it in 4wd last night it went into 4hi just fine. Put it in Neutral to shift to 4lo and when the transfer case went into N and tried to put it into 4lo it started grinding and wouldnt go into 4lo. Tried to take it back to 4hi and started grinding again. It has a manual lever for the transfer case. Anyone have any ideas on whats wrong? The dealer I got it from is 3 hours away.

did you try shifting it back into low? Mine did that once when I first starting using the 4wd but went away the more I used it [you know, when I was doing some hardcore mallcrawling]. I tried shifting it, it grinded, i moved forward, then tried again and it went in fine.

I just saw a post on the fj forum too about someone having trouble shifting into 4wd and many, if not all, the responses consisted of similar experiences with a new vehicle. They said time and use will allow a more smooth shifting.

Ya, I think I got that program, I think it was the incentive. I tried driving it again and what not. The thing is is that I have to shut it off and shift it into 2hi in order to get it moved. Its not just a little grinding, it is full on grinding. I know the local dealer wont be to helpful because I didnt buy from them.

when you shift from 4hi to 4lo you should be making the move in a smooth motion, meaning no stop in between 4hi and lo. when you leave it in neutral for any amount of time the output shaft of the tranny will begin to rotate causing grinding in the t-case. easier with a stick cus there is no connection between the engine and tranny threfore no turning of the output shaft, autos are constanly in motion, even in neutral, but in neutral there is just enough power getting thru to turn the output shaft if it is allowed to do so. sorry for the long post, and hope it makes sense, good luck!
