So... question is. Everything seems fine in normal drive mode except it’s not the most precise 6speed and we all know that it hunts a little..meh

But In “S” mode when I manually shift up for example from say 3 to 4 there’s a 1/4-1/2 second delay. I drove my girl 2018 Camry to see if it’s the same and it’s very responsive.

Of course I don’t always buy into the sky is falling scenario but I have read low tranny fluid from factory with tow package threads so...

There’s No way to check fluid level.

    1. Take it to dealer and say....drain and refill?

    2. This is normal bro?

    3. I would ....

Because it’s not a “manual” shifter. It’s a gear limiter.

well the Camry doesn’t do that. And the delay has nothing to do with limiting. You can “shift anytime you want. You can go from 2 to 4 if you wish or up to 6. And if it’s a gear limiter it will shift on its own if it the rpms get high enough. No offense but I don’t agree with that answer bro. Wouldn’t the ‘S’ mode in the Camry be a gear limiter too?
My experience with these set ups is to allows the driver to “manually” select the desired gear to be in

it doesnt matter what you agree with......its not going to change the fact that it is in fact a "gear limiter" and not a "manual shifter"

If that’s the case so be it. Is the Camry “s” mode a gear limiter too?

what "technical help" do you expect.

you asked a question.....was told it was normal......and then went on to say you dont agree with the answer.

and i have no clue what they put in the camry

Nevermind dude. You don’t get it. your response wasn’t needed. Either offer advice or jump to another ship. I’m new to the Tacoma and I offer any advice and understanding of anything I can offer. I don’t tell ppl doesn’t matter what you agree with or don’t matter what you think. Look bro I’m getting heated and off subject on a simple inquiry. I appreciate the dudes reponse. And as you know input varies which is why it’s called a discussion board not a one liner case, closed next question please. I’ve driven plenty of S modes in different vehicles and lately my girls Camry and my Accord and it didn’t say gear limiter any where and it allowed me to upshift or downshift or UP SELECT OR DOWN SELECT at will without a delay. My Tacoma when it starts of in 4th in S mode and up come to a light it doesn’t stay in 4th it goes down to 1or2 then if you up shift to the next gear at will you don’t have to redline there a delay between pushing up on the stick and the actual shift. Just finding out if others do the same because there’s no delay in other vehicles I’ve tried

I’m the one that told you what you needed to know and also called you a loose cannon.

And I GUARANTEE it doesn’t drop to S1 or S2 on its own at the light.

Ok. I get it now. I stand corrected. Or understood. After going through the manual it does appear that it’s purpose is for engine braking which would lay toward the gear limiter comment. Thx

Apparently in a car it’s more of a sport mode and in our trucks it’s purpose is more for towing.

It also does downshift on it own, especially when you cone to a stop. It's so the truck doesn't stall from too low of rpms

It is a gear limiter, not really a manual option like it seems. When you switch to S mode, it defaults to 4. It limits the transmission from going higher than 4th gear, but will switch on its own between 1-4 as needed. Now, if you redline to the max, it has a safety built in to not let you blow your transmission up, and will switch to higher gears as needed. My 4runner has S mode too (I have 5 gear transmission), and S mode is great for towing and driving in city traffic.

And “he” is right. It’s doesn’t drop down to s1 or s2 at a stop, it just starts off in a lower gear to prevent stall

Count the down shifts as you go from say 50 to 0. You will notice it downshifts to keep the truck from stalling. It's a safety feature

Ok, but the display doesn’t change. That’s the point I was trying to make to counter the OPs statement.
