Any woodworkers?

I'm just trying to buy something "cool" with the money that Home Depot. They put in a new AC unit for me like 3 years ago, and due to all of the messed up things on their end, they put in a new coil this year and gave me a nice gift card for the headache. I don't necessarily NEED anything, but figured a new tool could make it worth it.

 

the ridgid multi tool that has a bunch of heads you can get looks to be pretty cool. Like others have said, i use my oscillating tool mostly for carpentry work more than wood working. The multi tool from ridgid has lots of useful tools including an oscillating head. Might look into it.

I use an oscillating tool a lot, it is very useful, I use it for sanding into corners and such, as well as quick and dirty work renovating my house. It’s no replacement for a sander though. For that you really want a random orbital, preferably mirka or festool but your not gonna find those at Home Depot.

I do think an oscillating tool is a very worthy purchase and you will most likely find many uses for it.

Also fork over the extra $$ for the quality blades for cutting, they will last 10x as long.

Most recent creation. A ring box for my daughter's ring. She is the 7th generation in my family to own it. Near as we can determine it is about 1855 to 65. Want to make a special box for it. Still in the building stage tho. Had her birthstone put in it. The original stone was lost somewhere between my grand mother and her mother. Will give it to her for graduating college may of 2019.

 

Man some of you guys are awesome at this stuff! I have so much to learn. I am just starting with tables and flags to make some money to buy some better tools. I hope to eventually get into turning wood like some of y’all! Here’s a sample of what I’ve made so far. What do y’all think?

I didn’t really want to cross thread but I figured this might be an OK spot to do it.

 

I am quite easily entertained. I've only read the first two pages of this thread, and will fill in as time permits.

for a neophyte, why in the world would a jump to the overwhelming list of powertools mentioned be the important factor.

can you set up and tune any of the power tools listed?

if you cannot use handtools and understand their principles, power tools will only make you the same faster. and with potentially more damage.

can you build a box? a box is only a carcase, and a carcase is only a cabinet, bookshelf, ad nauseum.

can you cut a piece of wood with a handsaw to the required line?

can you plane the aforementioned piece of wood to make a fair edge?

can you measure accurately?

can you sharpen a chisel? or plane?

can use a file, bit brace, marking gauge?

can you identify a piece of wood and understand its characteristics (don't get me started on van conversions and bed drawers made with 4"x4" dimensional lumber and MDF!!!!)

there is so much to learn without the "required" equipment invested or warehouse of space "needed" to make a birdhouse.

New project brewing. At 110* and rising I can't start it this week but my walnut slab has arrived. 58" x 26" x 2.5" thick.


Yes it arrived with the bark intact. This is needed for my plans.
